My mother has a Sony 22BX220 LCD with a HD box connected to it and this message keeps popping up on the screen when she turns on the box.
It works no problem through the HDMI.

It is a copy protection 'feature' to prevent illegal copying/watching. HD content has to be protected according to the rights holders and all HD players must support the protection or it will not play.

You must be trying to use Component. You shouldn't get the message on SCART or HDMI

    Watty,
The mother is not trying to access the box through component she only uses Scart or HDMI and Sam she dosent have the HD pack.

Hmm, I can find no information on a KDL22BX220. Are you sure it's not a BX20 or BX200?

She doesn't need the HD pack to experience HDMI issues - you'll get that just from using HDMI connections where SKybox insist on HDCP "handshake" before HDMI works properly.

I get the feeling your TV isn't old, so would have expected it to support HDCP over HDMI. Is there another HDMI port on the TV you could try?

There are a few old TVs that don't have HDCP on the HDMI.
They are useless. If you have one and it's less than 6 years old you can probably win at small claims court as HDMI without HDCP is a Computer Screen, not an HD ready TV.

I saw the message some time ago, mainly on sony and pioneer sets,i used to install sky hd systems and the only way around it was to feed them via component, that was when there used to be component out and hdmi out on the sky hd box,

On newer European market boxes the Component is no better than SCART. HD is downsampled to SD.

    Byte,
yes it is a BX200 and not a BX220 dont know wheather is has a second HDMI socket or not but will have a look tomorrow when I am down with her.

Had this on a 6 year old TV when I connected SKY HD up to the HDMI port. I worked around it by powering on the TV first then immediately turning on the SKY box. Might not work for all TV's but worked most of the time for me.

That's a new, current range television, and as such should have no problems with HDCP.

Maybe it's a dodgy HDMI cable?

Yes, the signalling is on separate wires to the data. Try a different cable. The €2 ones usually are as good as the €40 ones. It's maybe just broken.

that is amazing ,you so often see dont skimp on cabling, spend at least 50 euro on a good hdmi cable, i have been at hifi shows where they are pedaling cables costing hundreds of euro.. makes you wonder

The important bit, the video data is basically Cat5e. There is no reason for a PREMIUM brand to cost more than €8, with a huge profit margin. I've extended a €2 1m HDMI cable to 12m using a pair of screened Cat5e cables, simply cutting the HDMI cable in the middle and splicing ends on to the CAT5e
    An example : http://www.techtir.ie/howto/hdmi-via-cat5-cable

A proper SCART cable ought to be x8 more expensive or more as it needs
3 x video coax for RGB
2 x video coax for composite in and out
    4 x audio coax for L & R audio in and out
    multiple signalling wires.
2 x plugs much more expensive than the simple HDMI plugs.

It's a total waste to spend more than €10 on an HDMI cable, unless its 10m long, then maybe €12 is reasonable. (the wire is cheap compared to fitting on plugs etc,)

@dharn - on reading your post, I'm not sure whether you're advocating spending big money on HDMI cable or not.....

Digital is digital. The cable will either work...or it wont. Watty is 100% correct. The cheap cables are usually as good as the expensive ones. They'll work first time and stay working, or they wont, in which case, buy another cheapo.
Anything else is just marketing blurb....just like the idea of buying a special "DIGITAL ANTENNA" for receiving digital tv signals....FFS! ;-)
