    Hi folks,

I'm wondering if it's possible to buy the upgrade version of windows 7 and download it rather than wait for the disc? Reason is Santy will be bringing me BF3 and I don't want to wait for physical delivery of a disc!

The Microsoft Ireland site just redirects to PEATs for purchasing which doesn't provide a download option.

    Anyone?

    Cheers

Since its an operating system you would still need to download an image, but i think its possible.

    actually it is:

    Thanks for the replies guys.

Looks like you need an address in the US to buy it from the US Microsoft site.

Even if I had an image, how would I buy the license?

Looks like I can buy the download here:

    http://software-stocks.com

Website looks dodgy though (spelling mistakes, grammar etc.)

How would one verify such things? Surely if it was not legit MS would have it pulled and would file complaint with Google so its not listed in results??

you'd be assuming that the website is hosted somewhere that microsoft can get to it, which could very easily not be the case.

also, google would need a very strong reason to not list something in their results, there's plenty of dodgy (and a lot more dodgy than that) sites that google WILL provide results for and links to.

    Fair points.

Sad thing is, I'm willing to pay full price, just don't want to wait for the CD in the post which would likely be well after Christmas at this stage... but there doesn't appear to be a legit way of buying a Windows 7 download and license if you're outside the US.

If you're a student or a member of your family is a student then you can get the software from here and as far as I know it's downloadable:

Maybe you should download one of the official Digital River ISOs and install without a key. That way you can use it for 30 days and activate it when you get the physical media and key.

now that IS very handy. :)

given the rampant piracy that already exists of windows 7 (and everything else), you'd think MS would be smart enough to make it easier to get a licensed copy online so they don't end up driving potential legitimate customers to illegal downloads out of pure frustration.

Out of pure frustration of what exactly? You can walk into any Brick and Mortar PC shop and grab a box for Windows 7.

the frustration of not being able to just buy a copy of windows and then download it like you can with any other OS.

have you not been reading the thread?

Apart from OSX http://www.apple.com/ie/macosx/ which other OS can you buy and download ?

OP wants to play BF3, so Linux is out. WINE is plain annoying to set up, and compatibility isn't always guaranteed. BF3 won't run on WINE anyways.

I have something of the same dilemma, in the sense that my netbook runs Linux but my main computer runs Windows because like it or not, I'm tied into Windows for a lot of my games.

don't be obtuse. the relevant point was that you can download any of the dozens of other OS you could possibly want to use, but the company that makes the one OS that most people want, makes it awkward to legally purchase and download it for the average user, despite the fact it can be illegally downloaded very easily.

I dont get it either, Capt moderates the windows forum and comes up with that yet win7 can easily be bought-downloaded through :http://www.microsoftstore.ie/shop/en-IE/Microsoft/Windows-7-Home-Premium-Full and even software4students.ie

dont even know why the thread is still running TBH
