Kanturk to Cork Turnpike

Has anyone any info on this unfinished turnpike which was to have crosssed the Blackwater at Rosskeen Bridge and presumably cut across the mountains in the vicinity of Bweeng.

I'm assuming that the remarkably straight section from Kanturk to Rosskeen (with the odd bend) is the part that was finished.

having got little information on this other than a mention in "where Dalua rolls its flood along", an excellent book on Kanturk's history by Patrick O'Sullivan that I got for Christmas, I went investigating today.

I find that what must have been the intended line of the Turnpike is all there and amazingly from the banks of the Blackwater on the back road from Rosskeen to Lombardstown there is an almost straight road between wide ditches running to Bweeng (turn left turn right in the village) and then almost straight all the way to Blarney with no turning off at all. In truth the road is a little wavy near Bweeng but this could have been older roads being used or to avoid steep gradients which horse drawn vehicles wouldn't like. Beyond Blarney the road through Rathpeacon, Monard and Killens is still there too, but I used the Blarney bypass which anyway is paralell.

It took me 40 -45 minutes to reach Blackpool (from Kanturk) which is more or less the same as using the usual N72/N20 route.

Well, it interested me anyway. :-)
