500km between December 23-31, 2011. No indoor trainer km's counted.

Anyone else doing this? Good to have a ol target, might keep me out of the pub for a bit and with the good weather we're getting it might just be doable.

Good man! Hope your injury wasn't an over use injury ;)
It's a tough enough challenge but should still be doable. I'm going to stick to relatively flat routes as a good week for me would be around 350km.

    Long story !
Damaged my back on May 1st..I had been training really hard..had some serious miles under the belt..Went for MRI physio etc etc took it easy all the good stuff..got going again ..Did 3 tours and back went again much worse..

....been out of action ..no gym no cycling to speak of..I'm the heaviest I've been in over 10 years ..put on 2 stonne!!

I've gotten the all clear after a series of further MRIS etc so I'm back to some serious work as of a week or so ago ..feeling good and raring to go..

    End of life story!!

Signed up as well, be warned, you also have to take pictures and give a small story (the more interesting the better) if you wish to get the patch, rapha won't accept strave kms on their own.

    81km down 419km to go

Suffered a bit today, my own fault as I brought finger less gloves and was so cold I could barely change gears at one point. Tough head wind on the way out but made up for it with a return tail wind.
Forecast tomorrow is for warmer weather but need to keep in mind possible freezing winds and rain :o

Like the idea, but in reality getting 17+ hours on the bike in the next 8 days is not going to happen for me. Good luck to everyone doing it!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 607 ✭✭✭seve65

deffo wont be doing this now. Rear rim is caput. And cycling that distance on my donkey of a second bike would not be fun.:D

Did 85k last night with a hangover.

Going for 50k or so now before driving home for xmas.

A fast solo 50km for me today at 29ave. Some heavy enough winds, dodgy gusts but fun tail winds.

Thats 130km down and 370km to go -a bit slower going than expected but defo going to get it done too.

    Happy Christmass all!

60 this morning and just 30 tonight, and strava had "problems with server" on both, hopefully they will load later but I won't have time to make it at this rate.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,013 ✭✭✭Ole Rodrigo

well, I started out this morning and didn't get very far. Its unlikely I'll make it up at this stage.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,505 ✭✭✭moby2101

Scratch off another 60 for me!
    That's 203 down with 4 days 2 go !

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 129 ✭✭shaneward2004

    329km 66% done :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 895 ✭✭✭Dubba

Done 44km today, started with a hangover and finished without it :D
That is 208km, 42% done - need to up the distances over the next 4 day to make the target.

What percentage have you done rocstar? Even if you don't make the full 500km it's still a good goal to aim for.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,013 ✭✭✭Ole Rodrigo

None. I did 20k earlier this afternoon but didn't bring the Garmin. Will hopefully be better by tomorrow and will try for a long spin.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 607 ✭✭✭seve65

Did u see the guy Stefan R at the top of the leaderboard, hes at 700K+ so far, and taking cool photos while hes cycling. Wow !

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,013 ✭✭✭Ole Rodrigo

Didn't see his pics - that's a good distance. He has been on top since the start.

Must have had turkey sandwiches for xmas dinner on the bike. :pac:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,505 ✭✭✭moby2101

75 in the worst wind I've encountered since I started peddling 3 years ago...Holy ****balls..
    200 and a bit 2 go!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,013 ✭✭✭Ole Rodrigo

Got a slow 50K in yesterday and got a puncture - roadside repair did nothing for my flu so am bowing out. Best of luck chaps.

More puncture problems for me yesterday so only got 7km in.

Got a nice fast 56km in tonight, some wind alright I flew past The Kingsley Hotel on the straight road in Cork at 50kmph(had to create a sprint segment).

Looking doubtful I'll make 500km as I've only 52%, 271km done with 2 days to go. Still its not over yet.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,315 ✭✭✭chakattack

    85% some serious wind today....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,001 ✭✭✭cantalach

I did 292km over three days up to 27th but then a sharp bend and some leaves conspired to bring me down heavily on my hip. An evening spent in the mayhem of Limerick Regional Hospital at Christmas time established that nothing was broken, much to my surprise and relief. But after three days, two ice baths, and innumerable Difene, I still can't reach down to tie my own shoe laces not to mind swing my leg over a bike. So my Festive 500 will be just a Festive 292 for 2011. Better luck next year eh?

Sorry to hear about your accident, but at least nothing broken,.. Where did it happen? Limerick boardsie here

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 129 ✭✭shaneward2004

    106km today,

50 today.. Leaving a 150 + spin for New Years Eve, gonna be on the road early 2mro!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 895 ✭✭✭Dubba

47km for me today and yet another puncture. Looks like I have my excuse ready for not making the full 500 :pac:
180km to make the 500 by tomorrow but going on the beers tonight makes it doubtful tbh.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,315 ✭✭✭chakattack

103%. sorry to hear about your crash cantalach. Only 499, schoolboy error shaneward :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 895 ✭✭✭Dubba

Thanks. It was at the Shannon end of the Bunratty Bypass (exactly at this spot). That yellow line on the left is kinda slippery when covered in decaying leaves...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 129 ✭✭shaneward2004

    60km today.

    Total for Rapha Festive 500 - 560km 112% :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,505 ✭✭✭moby2101

    Only 70 2day ;(.. Not enough !!
Think I'm about 90 short! Oh well..

Thanks to Dubba for starting the thread in the first place it was a great motivator ,.. There were one or two days there I wouldn't have bothered when the weather was crap.
I'm glad 2011 is almost done and dusted.

Personally it was a dreadful year, my mam passed away in July & to a much lesser extent I spent most of ther year unable to train due to injury..

A year I want to forget for the rest of my days.

I hope 2012 brings you all happiness and joy and I hope to see some of you on the road in 2012.
    My motto for 2012 HTFU!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 895 ✭✭✭Dubba

Very sorry to hear of your mum passing moby2101 & all the best for 2012.

I didn't make it either - 361km, 72% done... so must try harder next time :o

If its cool with the mods we can post up future Strava challenges as they come up, great for the ol' motivation & a bit of fun too!
