The Twelve Days of Christmas the library is closed to me

I discovered the incredible news today that the library is closed for 12 days starting from tomorrow.. I know what everyone will be thinking, yes the staff deserve their holidays, yaddy yah yah. However, I have a 6,000 word assignment due for the 4th of january, plus i have exams beginning on the 6th. Now considering that it is the students for which library is provided for, I don't see why it should be closed at such a crucial time of the year. What am i suppose to do? I'm sure there are many other students out there in the same position. I don't get 12 days off from work for christmas, I'm getting christmas eve and christmas day off. In fact I was lucky to christmas eve off. 12 whole days is ridiculously long in my opinion. Anyone feel the same?

Ah it's pretty annoying, but it's always closed this time of year. It wouldn't be so noticeable if the exams weren't starting so early. The Arts Block reading room is always open though, so I'd just go there to study. I don't need books or anything so it doesn't affect me in that way either.

When was the assignment put up?

In fairness, the holidays have been stuck on the front door of the library, and on the photocopiers for a couple of weeks. The details are also on their home page.

It must be a shock if you've only just found out. Don't forget about ebrary, Jstor, google scholar and all the other online resources available to you. You'll be fine!

I hear the library accepts laser cards but not E50 notes. Weird eh?

Harder to forge a Laser card, I guess

Why didn't you just get your books out before it shut for the holidays? Also, there's loads of electronic books in the library catalogue and other websites so I'm sure you'll be grand.

because i work aswel as college which means im a busy man. time is precious at this time of year especially when lectures are finished and i intended using the library in the absence of lectures. however that doen't seem possible now with the library staff soaking up the sun on some carribean island for the 12 days of christmas. but sure as long as the staff are looked after the students will cope

Having had a look through some of your previous threads I've come to the conclusion that you must be one of those people that rings in to Joe Duffy every day complaining about every sort of thing under the sun.

Get the books out before it closes. If that's not possible then look for a pdf version on the internet or on the library website. If all that fails then just relax over the Christmas and have a pint or 54. Don't get yourself so worked up about things, it'll do you far more harm in the long run than not being able to go to the library over Christmas.

Besides JSTOR, I find Ebrary another very helpful resource, accessible from home via the library site. Has many useful, modern, complete text books from all the major publishers and plenty of not so major ones.

Well, good for you, you certainly are a busy man.

Edit: Also, there are loads of libraries in Ireland.

Just sit in one of the other 12783612836271313 rooms dotted around the campus and access anything you need online? Or, even better, do it from the comfort of your own home. Shock-horror.

well considering there are two new hand dryers in the toilets in the arts block, I'm assuming 'moaning' does help.

Nah. But if you send a nicely worded email to the maintenance office they'll log a call to fix the item.

In fairness to the original poster the opening hours in the library are ridiculous before exam time.

The library should be closed only on the 25th, 26th and the 1st considering exams start on the 6th.

Well there's not that many people around over Christmas, a lot of people go home until after New Year's. And it's not like you can't study anywhere else, and there's plenty of online resources too.
I've spent my years being annoyed about it, I've finally made my peace!

are you taking credit for it now are you?

if the library staff want their holidays, then they should be dished out indvidualy over the months of december and january.

if like you said, that most the people go home for the holidays, then i don't see a reason why the library needs to be fully staffed.
