    Hi all,

i collected my new yorkie/jack russell cross on saturday.

she seemed fine but now has fleas and really bad worms, she is getting sick and i can see them (tape worm) and also in her poo (tmi) i got Troscon worming tablets last night and gave her one, my question is when will they work as she still had them this morning and what can i use for the fleas as she is a tiny puppy only 10 weeks old and all of the flea products i see are for over 12 weeks.

It is more than likely he had fleas and worms when you got him....and unfortunately it doesn't sound like a great place to be honest.

If a pup is left untreated for worms it can cause serious problems. Normally I would recommend liquid parazole but as you have already given your pup a wormer I would recommend straight to the vets with you today. He/she will give your some suitable flea treatment and some probiotics to help your pups tummy with worming.

Given the fleas and worms it is highly unlikely your pup has been vaccinated so you will have to go to the vet at some point but I wouldn't get him vaccinated when you are treating for a bad case of flea/worms.

    Best of Luck

ps: wormers take a few days to clear everything out of the system.

    Where did you get her?

To be honest it doesn't sound like she came from a decent place if that's the state she's in so I'd be bringing her to a vet.

    What about vaccinations?

  • Registered Users Posts: 402 ✭✭Jelly2

This all seems very strange. Your pup obviously wasn't looked after well by whoever you got her from. You should bring her to the vet for a general check, and s/he will be able to deal with any issues, including worms and fleas. Do you mind telling us where you got her (no names needed obviously)?

  • Registered Users Posts: 75 ✭✭Nixer95

    hi there,

yep she is vaccinated, i just need to get her last one at 12 weeks, they told me she was wormed and de-flead already.

I bought her from a guy on done deal, i saw both parents, there was five in the litter.

I will bring her to the vet tonight for a check up.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,413 ✭✭✭Toulouse

Did you get a vaccination card?

Seeing as they said she's been wormed and deflead and she isn't I would have my doubts about any vaccinations so vet will most likely advise to start them again.

Unfortunately if she has worms and fleas now....she wasn't dewormed or deflead and if you haven't been to the vet already highly unlikely she was vaccinated as worming and fleaing is the cheapest easiest part....go to the vet and bring your vaccination cert you got with her and let him take a look

The breeders may have been economical with the truth. It's possible that they did not even own the parents and pups, anything is possible in the murky world of dog breeding and trading unfortunately. But you must deal with what you have now, and that is a little dog needing help! Please let us know how you get on with the vet this evening, I hope that all goes well.:)

Six years ago we got our older dog from a farmer whose dog had accidentally become pregnant. The people were lovely and were desperate to find good homes for the puppies. Our dog was full of worms and the vet said that dogs from farms generally have a "high worm load".
It took about a week to get rid of the worms. For the first couple of days they were still wriggling in the poo  then you could see dead worms in the poo for several more days.
    Never had fleas (fortunately!)
We worm her and dog #2 every 3 months and never had a problem again. So I would say it is quite normal that you haven't seen a result yet.

True, I think; my sister's pup needed two doses when he arrived from a farm yard. He was fine after that though. This pup is vomiting though, which is bit more worrying.

Thank you for all your replies :D

I did ask for the vaccination card but he said he didnt have one, which i thought was odd as when we bought our rottie from a breeder he came with his vaccinations card.

Bad news that. I would think it means that she hasn't been vaccinated at all. Definitely best to tell the vet the story; for peace of mind, it would be better to start a new set.

There is no way this pup is vaccinated so you will need to start from the beginning. Bring the pup straight to the vet.

What an appalling state for a wee one. So sorry.

When we took the collie in she was five years old and never wormed etc. Not vaccinated either, or speyed.

She was thin but soon recovered.

We do not vaccinate as we are very isolated here and we worm rarely as these things are toxic and need care, but this situation is a needy one.

I'm sorry you're having these problems with your pup! :(

When we went to get our newest addition two weeks ago I asked for the vacc log aswell and was told that they didn't have one because it was done as a favour from a friend who's dad was a vet. I nearly laughed in her face but she totally knew I knew she was lying.

Rang the vet for an appointment when we were on our way back home with her and the following Monday (we got her on a Friday) we had her checked over. No worms or fleas thank goodness but the vet just took it that she hadn't had anything given to her so she got the full whack jabs and all.

Got her 2nd round yesterday and she's as healthy as she could be! :-)

    Good luck x

Call the owner and tell him you want to return the pup. I know its hard but we have to stop supporting these people. The pup was not vaccinated, de-wormed, or de-flea'd.

Never ever buy a puppy without hard evidence of vaccination and stay away from the internet.

Consider adopting a dog from a local shelter.

  • Registered Users Posts: 303 ✭✭tazwaz

Well thank god she now has you to look after her. Assume she was neither wormed, de-fleaed or vaccinated and bring her to the vets for everything. If she's vomitting the bet can probably give u something to settle her tummy as well.
Keep us posted and some pics would be nice :-)

She cannot be vacc'd now and any vet worth their salt will tell you that, a vacc on top of worms and fleas will not take or will be too much for her system to cope with.

There are plenty of puppy wormers available, chose the liquid ones and worm carefully according to weight. Repeat fortnightly until she is at least 16 weeks old.

For fleas, use medicated shampoo for her and spray for her bed and surrounds. You also need to repeat that as fleas lay eggs and not all sprays kill off the eggs. Fleas spend more time in the surroundings of the dog than actually ON the dog.

    Good luck.

Get to the vet asap, if you don't have medical logs, ask the vet to start over and flee and worm, the whole process should take just a few days.

Most importantly don't take the dog outside until the vet clears it for walks, without both vaccines the dog could get very sick and possibly die.

Tell everyone who asks, to contact the IKC for a list of breeders who actually care about their dogs.

No point in crying over spilled milk though, you sound like you have the situation in hand and your dog will be a lovely pet for many years, just do a small favour and tell everyone you know thinking about a pet dog, to go through the proper channels and use a list of good breeders to choose from.

Thanks and good luck with your pup

I doubt that pup was vaccinated at all the owner most likely lied through their teeth just to get money from you. All pups get worms but at 10 weeks of age the worms should be pretty much gone because worming is usually started a bit earlier. Have the vet check the pup out in case it's a severe case, if you didn't get a receipt then you probably won't get money back and if you try to ring the owner now they probably won't return your call and give you dogs abuse if you do get through that's what these people are like they don't care they just want your cash.

Never ever get a pup that is only half vaccinated whether it's adopting from a rescue (fostering is a different story) or buying a pup half vaccinated pups are still at risk and you are better off waiting the 12 weeks to ensure the pup is fully done, I know plenty of breeders normally do the 1st vax because people want their pup 8 to 10 wks old but it's worth the wait and worth insisting on the vaccinations being fully done. It also means you can socialise your pup straight away when you get it, it's worth waiting the extra 2 weeks and money wise it doesn't cost much more.

Hope the pup feels better soon, it's normal to see worms even after worming until the pup is fully rid of them but keep up the worming regime something gentle like Parazole is an idea it doesn't upset the tum as much as some wormers ask your vet if you need to but I'd give the pup a dose of Parazole despite the owner claiming to of wormed the pup but run that buy your vet first.

Just another example of the calibre of some breeders out there. Did a search on d.deal, unbelieveable ad 5 yorkie/jrt crosses and wait for it, i also have 4 pomerian cross yorkie pups. Blood boils reading this.
Anyway pup is better off now with you. Yes i'd like to say bring her back, but not many of us would after buying a pup. Dont know whether it would do any good, but you can report an ad on that site as misleading seen as though the pup wasn't in the condition you were led to expect.
Its a tough lesson, reading some ads they sell em well, so sincere. Lets hope the new act discourages these breeders. Thats my rant over now, apologies .Agggrrrr!
Best of luck with her Nixer95.

I had a foster pup come in a 6 weeks crawling in fleas. I only noticed them at night of course when there were no vets or chemists open  A tip I got was to dip a flea comb into olive oil and brush it through the pup, the fleas get stuck to the oil. It actually works really well! Having said that the pup then had to get a bath to get rid of the oil.

I feel I may have a pup from the same litter so obviously this post concerns me. The only thing is I got a vaccination card off the previous owner and he even gave me the 2jars that they came in. Im just worried now about the legitimacy of it all now. I went to the vet yesterday (before seeing this thread)for a worming tablet and have him booked in for his 2nd vaccination in january. Dunno what to do now

    Hi all

well we brought her to the vet and turned out she needed an anti biotic to help with her upset tummy, she got a new set of worming meds and also high calorie paste on her gums to help with sugar levels as she hadn't been eating much. We will also restart her vaccinations next week with the vet.

She is now in great form, the worms are gone and we have to wash her with puppy shampoo next week to help with the fleas.

to Worm a dog he needs to be on a Empty Stomach. I wouldnt do what one User said return him, the Dog will have a happier love with u then with that cu*t of a dog breeder..

I hope all is well with your dog now, my Mother got a chihuahua that was covered with the mange and she brought him from a Vet in Kerry, the vet wanted to Chip the puppy their and then, its when they got home they found out he had the mange,

they took her to their local vet in Cork and wanted to have the Vet in Kerry closed down my mother was to upset to go ahead with it she just wanted the dog to be better.. thankfully the dog is now 1year old and flying

it is getting harder now to find who is a Breeder in it for the money or to give a wonderful gift to a family.. i have a Chihuahua as well who is 3 years old bitch, she is kind and no problem and thinking of Breeding her to be able to keep 2 puppies off her and give the rest free to good home. and if she has only 3 i will keep the 3.

    Hi all,

Any suggestions what to do when a puppy is nipping everyone? My poor daughter who is four keeps getting nipped also, the puppies teeth are like needles :(

I read to give a chewy toy when it happens but she still continues to nip as soon as she stops chewing the toy.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,413 ✭✭✭Toulouse

    Perfectly normal puppy behaviour.

Just yelp loudly and pull away from the pup and ignore until calm. Pup will soon realise that nipping = no attention.

Here's an excellent online resource that will help you in all aspects of raising a puppy properly. http://www.dogstardaily.com/training/digital-dog-training-textbook

Ok another question, our puppy doesn't seem too mad on dry puppy pedigree or dry puppy bakers food, even moistened, the vet had said to give her dry chicken last week for a few days which she couldn't get enough of but now back to normal food she doesn't seem bothered with it. Any ideas for other food? She is still just less than a kilo so maybe the dry food is a bit much for her?

Sorry to say, but both Pedigree and Bakers are awful foods, really low quality. Go to your local pet shop and get a good quality one like Burns, Arden Grange, James Well Beloved, Hills, etc etc. They are all much better foods than the supermarket ones, try and stay clear of any pet food that can be bought in the supermarket as its usually crap.

You need to be firm too with it comes to feeding or you will end up with a fussy eater. If the pup thinks its going to get chicken because it doesnt eat the dry food they will cop on pretty quick to that one.

What you do is offer the food, leave it down for 15 mins, then regardless of whether its eaten or not you take it away and offer nothing else until next mealtime, not even treats. The pup will soon realise that if it doesnt eat up quickly, its gone and gets nothing for another few hours. Keep to this routine and after a day or 2 the pup will know to eat up or it gets nothing until next meal time.
