    You're supposed to have it on you when driving. I don't know how serious a Guard treats it at a checkpoint if you don't.

    Yes you need it. Also if you don't have it you're subject to the higher blood alcohol level if you're tested

    I think they only let you away doing that because of the stupid monstrosity that is the Irish DL. You're supposed to have it with you when driving. If it was a decent card-like size I'm sure there'd be no getting away with this present it at the station lark.

    I've always found it handier to have licence and ins. with me when driving as the cop can deal with things there and then, thus avoiding the need to start writing and nosing around to see if there's anything else that may not be up to scratch.
