went to the dentists the other day as my tooth was starting to hurt from an absess my tooth it had broke in half and some of it had rotted away over time but the other piece had stayed and now an absees had started to form, he gave me anti-biotics and ibrufen told me to take them and come back in a week so i did as i was told came back the next week i told him the tooth was still very sore to touch or eat with and that the absees had not gone completely,he said that it would be ok to remove the tooth so he gave me 5 or 6 local anasthetic injections in the gum and started to prise at the tooth not grab and remove it then tried to pull the tooth out i heard a horrible crack from the tooth i dont know if this was the tooth breaking away from my jaw or it breaking in two pieces but the pain was too severe for me to carry on with having it removed,he said the tooth had cracked in two pieces then told me he would make an appointment with the local hospital to remove the tooth that was about a week ago i havent heard anything from the hospital.

what do i do i havent eaten properly since i was at the dentist and he seemed kind of p***ed off that i didnt let him remove the tooth

I would get in touch with the dentist. I know the feeling, my dentist was working on a deep filling on a tooth with an absessed tooth. I have never felt anything like it in my life before and after that day.

Something went wrong with the filling, and there was air or something trapped in it pushing against my nerve. He tried to remove the tooth, it was another had never felt anything like it in my life. He had to stop. In the end the head dentist seen me, turned out the filling needed to be shaved down a little.

But give them a shout about it.

    Sorry to hear that you are having trouble OP;

First off, it is a common misconception that a tooth can't be removed if there is an abscess/ infection. Sure it can be more difficult to gain access to the tooth and more difficult to get anesthesia etc but sometimes there is no other option....

Again, sometimes extractions can be difficult, it may not seem like it but maybe your dentist was trying to do you a turn as he/ she knows that the hospital waiting list is long...

    You have a few options;
ring the hospital to check your waiting time
find a dentist who is good at "surgical extractions"
    find an oral surgeon
    go to a dental hospital.

Sounds like you should consider IV sedation too

In the meantime, you probably should be on a course of antibiotics but this problem won't go away without operative treatment.

    Good luck,
    OS

thanks guys im going to ring the hospital in the morning i think it would be a better option i am on anti biotics atm pinamox and ibrufen painkillers,
the tooth is just in front of my wisdom tooth near the back so is kind of an awarkward tooth to gain acess at as oral surgeon said an iv sedation would be a better option im not fond of needles but if they are needed it has to be done so didnt mind the local anasthetic there is no visable absesse showing so it must be under the tooth or inside it

thanks for all your help hopefuly i can have somthing done with this tooth soon

Yeah, he told me that if the anti botics didn't work I would have to go the hospital to get it removed under General Anistetic. I do hope you get it sorted I know the pain, and I was going nuts. I found that drinking water soothed the pain. The ibuprofen works a gem.

exactly the same as what he said to me yeah i noticed that cold water sooths it a lot i was in some agony with it i think its the ibrufen thats keeping the pain at bay
did you go to hospital and have it removed did you feel anything like under the general anathetic or are you completley knocked out for the count ive heard stories of people going under general anasthetic and been able to hear and feel everything but not able to do anything

Don't mind the stories... You would be asleep with GA, IV sed is better imo though....

im going through this at the moment. Abscess shot up in the last few days over a tooth that i half broke over the summer. went to the dentist today and he gave me a prescription for Keflex which im on for 7 days, and told me to get some painkillers for the immediate future (nurofen plus). I've to go back at the start of January to see how it looks, and more than likely get a root canal. Id prefer to get the tooth extracted, however, as i dont have the money for root canal treatment and anything else that might be needed afterwards (crowns etc.) were you given the root canal option? just wondering is root canal the best route to go down, despite the cost? or will it be just as safe to get the tooth extracted? :)

Kev_s88 if a tooth has an abscess your three options are always- do nothing, Root canal or extraction. There are pros and cons to each procedure and often times one treatment may be considered more favourable than another eg root canal on a front tooth. It really depends on your specific sitaution
Make sure you discuss the options fully with your dentist to evaluate all the possible scenarios and costs.

thanks for the response Mush. The abscess is in one one of my premolars. Dentist said he would prefer to save the tooth if possible. he's my dad's dentist as well and he told me he's never been afraid to push for the expensive treatment. would i need to get a crown if i have the root canal on it? or is that just optional to make it look normal? with him i could be paying upwards of €1400 for the root canal, and crown. as opposed to €70 (and a lot less hassle) for the extraction

Had a bad absess a few years ago, which caused my eye to close like I had been punched by Mike Tyson.

Dentist gave me antibiotics and a few days for them to work. They reduced the swelling a bit but he said he would need to get the tooth out without much more delay.

I got injections, plenty of them, but they did not work much. Dentist said sometimes with absesses they stop the injections from numbing the area.

So he had to proceed with gas & air and take the tooth out. It was messy but got there in the end.

    Wish you all the best.

    ouch!
Had similar issue myself tooth broke on removal, but a piece of the root remained and they left it in but they said if pain continues tooth would have to be removed, they mentioned root canal which is costly and requires a few visits to complete.
I would rather get the remains taken out its less painful and much less hassle and a quicker recovery.
You need to find a good dental surgeon ive had one or two bad experiences and never went back to local or recommended ones.
When i needed a check up and a filling i went to **no names please** which was the nearest at time to do an emergency treatment, ive continued to use them since they are great and also cheap if you paying private.
good luck keep us up to date.

Hey Nick, well the antibotics worked on mine and the shaving of filling helped with the infections caused by the gum to swelling above the tooth.

Most likely not the solulion for Nick though, in general antibiotics are a temporary solution to dental infection- some operative treatmen is usually need in the form of root canal treatment, extraction or deep scaling etc....

OP the waiting times for these public hospitals is off the charts, expect to wait for many months....

You could try to go to a dental hospital (Dublin or Cork) but don't bother with a general hospital A&E.
The dental A&Es run a triage system so you may or may not get treatment that day depending on your specific condition or the workload of the clinic that day... If you are going, be early (about 8) and take a ticket, as the early bird.....

    Good luck,
    OS

Make a warm water and salt mouth rinse, it will calm the infection. Rinse out your mouth as often as possible.

Unfortunitly, the pain and infection is caused by a decayed broken down tooth and most likely the OP has an infection in the bone around the roots of the tooth. Because of this the salty water rinse will not do too much to help....
If the pain and infection was caused by an impacted tooth with food impaction and stagnation etc then yes the rinses would help in many cases.
