Tommy Bowe's Contract?

I was just wondering when Bowe's contract with the Ospreys will expire. It seems to me that the O's are going nowhere fast and Bowe would definitely benefit from a change of scenery. He would be a great buy for Munster or one of the French clubs.

Not sure when he's out of contract but the salary cap in Wales might make it easier to get him back to Ireland... Would love to see him in a Munster shirt but reckon its unlikely.

Edit: He's contracted until the end of 2012/13 season

How much does would he get paid roughly?

IIRC from a few years back (so probably complete conjecture ;p) it was range of €250,000 so top range for Pro12 player (ODriscoll / OConnell / OGara aside). Think that was arrived at based on what he turned down elsewhere / what other "famous" wings were getting. I think most players, even decent ones, are well under 100,000 k though, really depends on if you can create a bit of a name.

New Welsh salary cap, his age etc. will see him in Munster I'd imagine, or back home.

Did I hear somewhere that BOD was on about 750 including promotions? Or was that 750 for a three year contract. Ie 250 a year?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 37,978 ✭✭✭✭irishbucsfan

I think Bowe is happy in Wales though, and Ospreys have really benefitted from their change of approach this year.

Don't see him playing for an Irish province other than Ulster, who have Trimble and Gilroy.

I would say 330k* per year before bonuses & endorsements for our top earners.. BOD,POC,???

ROG would have been up there with them in the past but I don't think Sexton or Heaslip were put on the top tier when the renewed their contracts earlier this year.

*note: Figure 100% pulled from my arse!

I would love to see Bowe at Munster. Would be a fantastic replacement for Howlett.

Probably unlikely but I can always live in hope.

That article would indicate that Heaslip is paid around the 330,000 mark by Leinster. I'd say BOD is on more though?

In before JustinDee states that any and all figures about what players are paid are made up/speculation. ;)

Heaslip is not paid by Leinster. He's on a central contract and under the control of the IRFU not Leinster.

Bowe's contract is up at the end of this season. He signed a two year deal with the option of a third.

lets not forgot that he is now dating a welsh girl too, unfortunately it might be a factor if he decides to resign with O's.

I'd say he'll most likely renew his contract at the end of this season, Ospreys are a young side with a lot of talent and could be competing for the HC next season. If he leaves it'll be for a top side capable of winning the HC. Cant see him going back to Ulster the way the coaching setup there is at the moment and the brand of rugby they're playing. He strikes me as an ambitious guy eager to improve his game. One thing for sure if he does decide to leave he'll have his pick of clubs. From an Irish point of view Munster is the ideal destination

No you're right she might be lovely and I she is pretty good looking. It is a fact that according to a lot of girls he is the most desirable on the Irish team.

Sure they had to fork out the big money to keep ROG from defecting to the Miami Dolphins

Last time out Bowe said he'd only come back to Ireland if it was to Leinster.

IRFU said Ulster or nowhere, so he stayed.

I would love to see him back, and at his home provence of Ulster. They're really a team coming of age, and his skills and experience in the back 3 is exactly what they need. (as well as an international quality 10)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 37,978 ✭✭✭✭irishbucsfan

I'm sure Ulster would be better with Bowe on the wing but I wouldn't like to see Gilroy on the bench. Happier to see Trimble, Gilroy and Bowe all starting in the heineken cup, its better for Irish rugby!

Happy enough but was open to a move home after his last contract expired. The IRFU were content to let the Welsh pay his wages by all accounts. You'd have to ask Jaco how true that is though.

Would the tax back options for retiring sports people have an effect on his decision? He'll need to finish his career here to claim tax back.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 28,138 Mod ✭✭✭✭Podge_irl

Ulster players don't get tax back

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 3,093 Mod ✭✭✭✭ktulu123

We don't exactly need him but I for one would welcome Tommy Bowe to Leinster. I think blue would suit him :)

Wherever he goes it should be back to Ireland if he actually wants to win anything. I cant see Ospreys being a serious contender for the Heineken Cup for the next 5 years at least.

Ulster players CAN get their tax back, Northern Irish players can't :) depending on where they pay their taxes depends on whether they can get their tax or not, I would imagine Tommy kept an address in Monaghan to avail of the tax benefits.

Think its irrelevant where Bowe lived. UR are registered in Belfast. Though I'm no tax expert

After the Ospreys, pretty much any kit is an improvement! They all look like they sat on a patch of wet paint on Sunday...

Centrally contracted players would be paid out of Dublin (IRFU) though, your tax is decided on where you live, not where your employer is based, personally, I work for a UK company but I pay Irish taxes.

Thinking about it... Over the past 3 years, have we gotten through a 3-month stretch on boards.ie without a disucssion about Tommy Bowe's contract situation?

    probably not.

The new rules would imo make Tommy an even more attractive target for Munster and Ulster. I can't see Leinster even going for him, too many back three players at the moment. Maybe if Carr leaves and Horgan retires

Nope. Didn't want to go back to Ulster, despite IRFU trying to get him to go. He said he'd come back to play for Leinster, but IRFU wouldn't allow it.

It was Matt Williams who gave this information as fact, I can't remember if it was in an article or on TV though. There have been a couple of threads about it on LF also.

This was when he signed his last contract though, so presumably a couple of seasons ago, so who knows where he stands now.

Ulster are solid Quarter-final contenders, no matter what group they're in these days, which is more than can be said for Ospreys, so maybe he'd reconsider.

I don't think it was a place thing, I think it was a silverware thing.

Bit short sited by the IRFU, One would think it would be better to have him playing in ireland than not at all.

the similarly fooked up with Simon Easterby, he wanted to sign for Leinster, IFRU told him Ulster, he said ok i'll stay where i am.

Welsh people don't have a personality Noffles :p and there is definitely nothing wrong with her appearance.

You may well see Bowe in a Munster shirt in a season or two I'd say. Ulster are producing a lot of players through their academy but Munster are still very short on quality back 3 players

See, I disagree with that; if he's playing top level rugby with Ospreys, why would the IRFU be falling over themselves to bring him home?

The whole NIQ clampdown is so that we can bring younger guys through, develop strength in depth etc etc, but if Bowe comes back to Ulster, it's the end of any first team chances for Gilroy because Trimble and Bowe would have the wing jerseys locked down.

Surely it's better for the Irish team to leave Bowe where he is (and have his salary paid by someone else) and just accept that he won't be at the IRFU's beck and call for every team get-together.

The new rules coming in for NIQ players sounds very dodgy (unrelated to this particular thread), but if Leinster had the choice, I don't know if they'd want to pay top dollar for another player in a position where they have tons of cover.

Not Bowe, the other side of the table, but that is irrelevant really considering this is an internet forum, I could be claiming to be batman!

What Williams said according to yourself (I can't remember it but it sounds like something he'd say) is that the IRFU tried to get Tommy Bowe to go back to Ulster and he didn't want to go and would only go to Leinster, that didn't happen. I'm a big fan of Matt Williams but in this instance his insider knowledge isn't serving him well, and I think his relationship with the board could well have something to do with that.

AFAIK Bowe told the IRFU that he was happy in Wales and wasn't interested in returning at all. Fingers crossed that changes in the future though, would love to see him in blue.

Fair enough. I can't link it, but it was said on his Setanta show on the same episode as the Leinster v Cardiff, Ospreys v Munster episode iirc.
