How to make sense of these speed test results?

    BroadbandMax (www.speedtest.bbmax.co.uk):

    11796 Kbps
    9082 Kbps
    23274 Kbps

    SpeedTest.net:

    5.89 Mb/s
    5.26 Mb/s
    6.03 Mb/s

All are download speeds. Little variation in upload speeds.

All tests carried out within a 3 minute period using a Tooway satellite service sold by KBO in Ireland on the default test server. Tooway8, rated at 8Mb/sec download, 2Mb/sec upload. Weather cloudy with intermittent light rain.

    I have two questions:

    1. Why do the two different speed tests report wildly different download speeds?

    2. Which is more correct?

    Thanks,
    Mark
