I've already got mine and plans are in the pipeline:D

Modified astra vans, especially G's and H's are getting very popular(in an undeground kind of way) in the UK and europe.

I looked at 9 all over the country before I bought my one. Most have been ragged and poorly maintained, as with most work vans.

I was after the sportive model which are even harder to find:eek:

I'm going to keep it simple, low suspension and wide wheels.

As she stands now in factory spec:

Pardon the pimpage lads, just spotted this thread in my feed reader: I've a lovely minded G on Adverts.ie atm -- black with tints, Irmscher alloys with a partial set of black 17" Team Dynamics ProRace 1.2 thrown in, and the great 2l turbo diesel engine, none of your 1.7 isuzu nonsense. I was going to smooth and shave it, but I found a great 740i in the meantime so the van has to go. Great project material though.

I won't link it for fear of being accused of spam, but it's easy to find on Adverts. Gimme a shout if you've any questions.

@Nissan doctor, the engine in the standard 1.7d Astra G van was sourced from Isuzu, and it wasn't a great engine. The 2l diesel is a standard GM unit, not as powerful as the rare 2.2 but better from a servicing point of view. Which part of that are you disputing, or was that just a poor attempt at humour?

@fanadman1 the G is absolutely fine on 17s as long as you don't get carried away with 40 profile tyres (which is why I have a prorace rim awaiting welding). I live in the country and I ran on 45s, no problem. It has great handling even on the Irmschers though, the only fault I'd give it is incredibly light power steering.

The original Isuzu 1.7td is renowned for being one of the most reliable diesels used by Opel, its original block is the basis of the 1.7cdti engines still used now.

The GM 2.0d only had barely 10hp more then the 1.7 and wasn't as reliable or tunable...so much so that they stopped offering it the astra after 03 but continued using the 1.7. The current 2.0cdti that Opel use is a Fiat engine which is not connected to the old GM 2.0d.

@OP, if you can find another last off the line 05/06 sportive model like mine they used the astra H's 100hp engine rather then the standard 75/80hp astra G engine.

You have a different source of information to me, because I've heard nothing but bad about the isuzu engine (when it was in the G at least); "underpowered" and "crap" being the most common associated terms. The one I drove was about as much fun as a Micra.

I'm pretty sure the DTi has more than 10bhp over the Isuzu block, I think it's more like double that; I'll check tomorrow.

I'm not certain that 'underpowered and crap' are any indication or reliability.

    Anywho,

    1.7td(X17DT(L) - 68hp
This is the original all Isuzu unit.

    1.7dti(Y17DT) - 75hp
Isuzu based engine fitted with GM designed 16v head.

    1.7cdti(Z17DTL) - 75/80hp(100 in late sportive models(Z17DTH)
As above but with Fiat developed common rail injection.

    2.0dti(X/Y20DTL) - 84hp(There was a 100hp Y20DTH but it wasn't available in the van)

The 2.0dti does have a stronger gearbox then the 1.7 models though.
