8th of January. Can't see Dublin bandwagon travelling in big numbers anyway.Too early in the year and too cold for them

Why what are the attendance numbers for your county like in these competitions?

Awful, every county has sunshine supporters. My point is I can't see many heading down to watch Carlow in oByrne cup even after an Ireland win!

So you meant to say "too cold for everyone" rather than "too cold for them"? ;)

Well I was replying to the first poster regarding Dublin as he was interested to see will attendances have picked up. O Byrne cup won't attract many regardless.

Their league games should have higher attendances only if the gaa have common sense to market them properly!

Lets be honest about this, its a pre-season tournament in the coldest bit of the year, where most teams will be fielding second string sides.

I can't comment on the Dubs attendance yet obviously, but has winning the All Ireland meant big increases to crowds in these tournaments for any of the recent winners?
    I'd doubt it.

The Spring Series 2011, ring any bells ?

All home League games in Croke Park ?

When the attendance figure is one of the more interesting facets of the sporting contest there is something radically wrong with its structure.

Yes I was there on a Sunday where less than 20,000 turned out. Dublin county board spent almost 200,000 on marketing. I would applaud that normally as Gaa marketing worked very well for the likes of other floodlit games in 2008 and 2009 on a Saturday night with huge crowds.

Problem here is that they spent 95,000 on Jedward and co and crowds weren't great. It wasn't really profitable for them.

I really think Saturday night games generally work well and if advertised will do well even in the darker evenings up until April. When I question the likelihood of there being proper marketing this year it more to do with the fact that the fixtures don't suit Dublin too well (2 saturday night home games) and I just doubt they will risk promoting the series as well this year. Kerry v dublin should be tasty one anyway! All three games should be set for Saturdays but anyway...

urrrrghh @ this thread. These competitions are always an interesting part of the GAA calendar for me. The first steps on the long road to Corke Park for all the teams. That this thread should be about Dub bashing is sad.

Mods - Any chance of closing this thread and opening a new one for pre-season Football and Hurling tournaments? Would be nice to be able to discuss these fresh without any of the BS on this thread in the new year.

(btw often some good betting opportunities in these games, due to some advanced team knowledge also ;))
