Procedure for Equity

Would anyone be able to tell me what is the difference between an equitable doctrine and common law doctrine procedurally? For example if I am in a case regarding breach of contract and my defence is duress, do I have a seperate defence of equitable undue influence or does the judge look at my defence of duress and then state that I can win on grounds of equity or does it work an other way entirely?

Sorry for the lack of clarity in advance.
