Help me with a swimming programme

I've joined my local gym (and quit) twice over the last three years. Each time I got really into and enjoyed swimming. After a few weeks I built my fitness up by going swimming five days a week. On a good day I'd manage to swim
    10 lengths front crawl,
    10 back stroke,
    10 breast stroke
    10 side stroke
    10 free style

However, I eventually got bored and stopped because I felt like I wasn't really working towards something. I want to rejoin and start swimming but I think I'll only end up quitting come April. Any tips/advice re: a training programme?

If your getting bored swimming, I can think of two ways to overcome this,

    1) Target an event that needs you been able to swim. Maybe a 1 or 2km open water swim next year.
    2) Join a local swimming club or masters club. You cannot beat training in a group. Motivation will be there. Where are you located?

Number 2 sounds pretty good, I live in Maynooth. Is there anything like that nearby?

Motivation is the key in swimming, set a target for yourself, this is what people do when they swim competitively, they look for a race and they say to themselves that they want to win it, because of the motivation they do not get bored, and they continue swimming, also swimming with a friend is also good, race each other, see who get the set done the fastest, it breaks up the hour or two hours you are swimming. Joining a masters club is great for this idea, normally you would find one in every swimming pool, sometimes they are not called master swimming clubs, but the training is know as lane training, or master swimming, the last two are not clubs, but they incorporate the same training in which you would find in master swimming clubs.
