Hi, We've just found out hubbies job at risk and were wondering if worst comes to worst and he can't find another and ends up on sw would his redundancy be taken into consideration. We are hoping this doesn't happen and he can find another job but are just going through all scenarios and can't find anywhere that says if redundancy will or won't be taken into consideration.

Lots of Info here, depending on PRSI contributions he could be entitled to Job Seekers Benefit which isin't means tested.

When JSB runs out, Redundancy is taken into Account for savings Amounts over €20000 for the Job Seekers Allowance means test.

If you are under 55 and get a redundancy payment of more than €50,000 you are disqualified from claiming Jobseeker's Benefit. The table below shows how long you may be disqualified for. Any period of disqualification is subtracted from your total Jobseeker's Benefit entitlement. So if you are disqualified for 3 weeks (which is 18 days payment) your JB claim starts on day 19.

Amount of redundancy payment Period of disqualification
    €50,000.00 - €55,000 1 week
    €55,000.01 - €60,000 2 weeks
    €60,000.01 - €65,000 3 weeks
    €65,000.01 - €70,000 4 weeks
    €70,000.01 - €75,000 5 weeks
    €75,000.01 - €80,000 6 weeks
    €80,000.01 - €85,000 7 weeks
    €85,000.01 - €90,000 8 weeks
    €90,000.01 and over 9 weeks

Thank you. If i've read that right as he has paid tax for over 7yrs ever since we moved to Ireland and never been unemployed he can claim for me and our youngest as the other one is 18 and at college. We have no mortgage and are in rented while finishing off our house but that'll be done in the new yr so thats one worry off our minds.

Anyway fingers crossed it doesn't come to that.

If you're not working yourself, then yes he can claim for you and the youngest child. If you're working, it depends on how much you're earning on whether he'll get an increase for you or the children.

If he's still on Jobseekers after 6 months he can claim for the 18 year old also provided that he's still in full-time education and not in receipt of a social welfare payment of his own.

Are you renting or do you have a mortgage? If so, then rent supplement or mortgage interest supplement may also apply. If you have a mortgage, make sure you get any application for mortgage interest supplement in before the New Year as the rules are about to change! For rent and mortgage interest supplement, only the first 5,000 of savings are disregarded.

Thank you, no i'm not working but i will look harder for work now. We are renting at the moment while we finish renovating our house(its uninhabitable at the moment). We have no mortgage on that house and any redundancy will likely be swallowed up finishing it off as he is entitled to less than €8000 and the company are in no position to pay anything but it will make life easier once we are in there. We have no cu loans and only owe 2000 on the car so we are going to clear that asap. I appreciate we will hopefully be in a better position than some then but its still worrying.

If you are renting at the minute, but own another property, then you will NOT be eligible for rent supplement.

You could apply anyway and argue for a short-term payment of rent supplement on an exceptional basis while your house is made habitable again, although this would be a tricky application. You would need to contact someone like Threshold www.threshold.ie or the Irish National ORganisation of the Unemployed and get proper advice on that. The latter have an information line on 01 8560088
