Christmas - what is the point?

Saw this other thread on whats the point of having kids.

I'm wondering why are people so hooked up over getting presents for christmas and buying presents for others?

I have absolutely outgrown the material aspect of christmas and I know I would much prefer it to be a time of year JUST FOR MEETING FRIENDS AND FAMILY AND NOTHING ELSE.

If this was the case most of the people in this country would be so much happier and we would be saving so much money.

    P.S. Serious/honest posts are welcome

So the part in caps would be the point, then?

JUST FOR MEETING FRIENDS AND FAMILY AND NOTHING ELSE.
I think that is what it's about for most adults.

And if it isn't, perhaps they won't be trying to bump into you so you'll never have to worry about them.

If someone wants to spend Christmas week as a snowman I really couldn't give a f*ck.

Exactly thats what I think christmas should be about, meeting friends and family and no more giving and recieving.

I bet most posters here can recall a heap of presents that they never used, I know I can.

What is the point? To celebrate the birthday of Jesus of course.

To get presents and Christmas dinner.

It's all about driving for me.

    Driving home for Christmas.
    My relations driving me mental.
    Driving my parents to drink.
Nights in the old local pub driving home the point that me and my old school friends have nothing in common any more.

To meet c**ts you didn't like in school in the pub around Christmas and listen to the c**ts say how they are just home from Dublin and can't wait to go back.

At least we don't have to listen to them go on about house prices now, c**ts

Post-modernism is grand, but so are presents. Once a year; bit of fun.

The same point of everything else.
We need things to look forward to.
We break up the year into segments - Halloween, Christmas, Easter, Summer, mother's day, father's day, valintines day etc...
Just routine traditions that we follow.

its not just a pagan hijacked celebration for jesus unknown birth date, its also a deeply embedded tradition and routine for a lot of people-one which had been inspired by saint nicholas.
many who are of no religeon or of other religeons such as islamic based ones still like to get involved in the traditional side and give/recieve cards and presents.

am a fan of the christmas decorations and lighting once used to them being up;and infact had just been out with everyone this evening driving around picadilly [manchester] checking out the awesome lights they have there and seeing the christmas market beautifuly lit up.
love getting the presents,as a child it usualy meant being able to get a new computer game and rarely a console as mum/dad werent able to afford them normaly, now days find it both enjoyment and a routine that have always followed to buy all the pets and then other people presents.

thanks to living in a residential home; where we are only allowed next to nothing in benefits, this year have got absolutely no money to buy anyone presents at all and was getting harassed by mum to buy everyone presents-she kept taking it as an insult when staff told her there wasnt any cash and still kept on and on.

coudnt even afford cards so had ended up making them instead, but then the sis had done the same thing except with a profesional card making kit thing, hers looked awesome next to mine which looked like garbage in comparison.
we are going to be doing baking this week for presents-making biscuits and things like that, hopefuly that will tone down the pressure she gives,
need to get the cats something for christmas each-possibly bake them kitty christmas cakes.

Variety is the spice of life and christmas for all it's commercialism is part of that variety although it can't be much fun for many, especially anybody who has to live on the streets .
