Ebay Question Regarding Return Postage

Ebay live online chat doesn't seem to be available, and last time i sent them an e-mail, the didn't reply, so hoping someone here can help.

I bought a relatively cheap used laptop on ebay from a private seller in England. He charged £12 for postage, which was registered delivery from UPS.

Turns out the laptop had a battery fault which the seller allegedly didn't know about it. When I e-mailed him about it, he was apologetic and offered a refund.

I went to An Post today with the laptop packaged up, and was rather shocked to find that it would cost 40 Euro to send back to him.

I paid the 40 euro (what choice did i have), but i'm not sure if the seller is obliged to refund this 40 euro on top of the refund. Is this return postage fee refundable from said seller, or have I basically lost this 40 quid?

Ebay rules seem to be rather sketchy on this subject, anyone here have any experience with this problem? Thanks in advance.

When dealing with eBay the cost or return postage is not covered by the seller. It is the buyer's responsibility.

I hope it was registered post too, otherwise if it goes missing you won't get a refund of the original cost either.

In some cases you will find that sellers will opt to cover this cost but thats completely up to them in a case like this.

was it over 2kg or were the dimensions the problem for posting? If they were you could try be a little more conservative on the packaging, if it's over 2kg though, there's not much else you can do, maybe try another company to see if you can get a cheaper economy rate. If it's costing €40 then it's going via parcel post, in which case it's automatically insured.

    Yes it was around 3.5kg.

The seller is now claiming that the laptop isn't faulty, so he is refusing to give anything for my postage costs. Not a lot I can do really as it's his word against mine.

I have noticed that eBay has gone down the toilet in terms of communication. Their online chat option ceases to exist, they don't respond to e-mails anymore, and they used to get involved when you 'opened a case' online. Now they just advise you to e-mail the seller directly, which is what I had done already.

Anyway, thanks for your help guys, guess this is just 40 euro I will have to write-off and lesson learnt, no more big purchases on eBay.
