I am putting serious consideration into doing the Warriors Run 2012 next Aug. I only started running this yr and can just about do 5k(flat terrain) comfortably.

Having said that due to work commitments I have not got out for a run in about a month. I want to start a gradual training regime in the new yr so as to build up to competing in the Warriors 7 months later. I am not looking to win it or set records just to start and finish it preferably while still daylight and most importantly to enjoy it.

So has anyone any advice for me? I will be joining the gym in new yr too as won a yrs membership. This is about me finally getting fit, healthy and having something to aim for at the end of it. I live in Dublin if that helps.

    cheers

Hiya. I do it every year. If you stick warriors run into the search facility here there a good few old threads you should read through.

Essentially its 4k on road. 4k off road walking slogging/ descending and 6k road to finish.

Id keep training as normal. On your own or join a fit for life group/club. 8 weeks out from teh race you can get more specialised. Adding hill training, fast runs, some cycling (for climbing) even hill walking.

The races on www.imra.ie EVENTS page, particularly Leinster league will give you allround training for the Warrors run.

There is a 5k race on howth on the 22nd Jan actually which might be a first target for you.

To train for that mix threadmill with road running.
Work a stepper and or climbing machine to practice climbing.
Use weights in teh gym but lightish weights and many reps.
On an outside run, do 6-8 fast bursts at the end of an easy run. Not all out sprints but 90% fast but under control.

If youre short of time you can do a 15 minute run. 5 min easy 5 min medium 5 minute peg it!

Have fun with teh training and enjoy it.

Deffo try and get out to a ferw races though. There are tens of thousands of people running in Dublin and its a brilliant healthy and social community to plug into.

Thanks for ther reply. I am familiar with the route as walked it a few times as I used to live in Strandhill and thats one of the reasons I want to aim for this one. I intend to get a weights/fitness programme once i join the gym.

I am going to head out for a short run this avo to get back into the swing of things and aim for Howth in Jan. Would you have a link for this race??

    cheers

My advice is run as much as you can, building up gradually.
Definitely do a 5K as soon as possible, followed by a few 10Ks in Spring and early Summer. Include hills as much and as often as you can.

I did the warriors for the first time this year after coming back from knee surgery 12 months before and really enjoyed it - it's one race that lives up to the hype.

moved to Training Logs. The Events forum is generally for discussion of the event itself - date, conditions, ratings etc - while the logs forum is for discussing training.
