You can run the aerial through the VCR and then into the Saorview box, the VCR will need to be tuned to the existing analogue channels in order for him to record TV programs for the next year or so.

When the analogue signal is switched off (in 'late 2012'), the VCR will no longer be able to record TV programmes but he can continue to playback existing VHS tapes - either prerecorded movies or series, or programs he recorded himself. At that stage you should disconnect the aerial lead from the VCR and run it straight into the Saorview box as the VCR will not be able to handle the digital signal.

Forget about replacing the VCR (except for playing back previously recorded tapes)
If the Saorview thing you got is a saorview STB (set top box) & not a saorview tv, then the STB probably has a usb socket. Plug a usb memory stick or external hard disk into that slot & stb now becomes a recorder.

VCRs are extremely difficult to source now. Most of the big players stopped manufacturing a couple of years ago.

Power City have a Toshiba VCR/DVD recorder combi box for €242, it doesn't record MPEG4 so will not record after ASO but will play the OP's fathers tapes.

    Moving to Terrestrial.

Note that a VCR should still be able to record after ASO if its got a SCART-in and you connect the Saorview STB via SCART. Obviously, only the channel you're currently watching.

Mine has a sign 'no scavenging' which suggests they don't encourage recycling i.e. it's a one-way street!

Absolutely - there's at least 2 or 3 down at our local recycling place every time I go there, along with HiFi systems, DVD players, Sky boxes etc - almost all of which work just fine. Only problem is that you are unlikely to find the matching remote control with them.

I find a quiet word with the guys in the yellow jackets allows a reasonable amount of recycling. Do it before you delve in. Alternatively, try and talk to the donors before they donate.

    Worth a try.

Around here (Cork) I'd put a request up on FreeCycle - dunno what works where you are? You'd get one no bother - they are just gathering dust in most houses. Put up a Wanted card in Tesco/Centra/whatever?

VHS/DVD combi's are still being manufactured.

VHS only decks seem, to be still on sale in various countries on the continent (Netherlands, Poland) although they probably would only be usable (for recording or playback) via SCART in Ireland owing to different sound frequencies.

    They have re-use in UK.
But in Ireland there is no Reuse allowed. It's destructive recycling only. Criminal.
