Spent a few nights last week gathering photons in the light bucket. A fine looking galaxy with a rather uncatchy name. I'm still getting to grips with Photoshop and am not sure about the processing job so far - might be a tad overcooked. I hope to revisit it some time soon and get some longer exposures to bring out some more detail in the very outer dust lanes. Criticism is very much welcome.

    3h 40m total exposure
    60s and 120s subs @ ISO 800
    Canon 450D + 10" Newt @ f4.7
    Unguided

    Hi

Thats very good for unguided for 60s 120s. What mount are you using?

If I was to be picky (and I'm not trying to be) there is just a a small bit of Coma creeping into the shot towards the edges.

    Regards

    Thanks dbran.

Mount is the CG5-GT. It struggles under the payload and to get any decent subs at all is hard work. I need still nights, and use a huge fishing umbrella to shield the scope from any small breeze. Unfortunately, I don't have a spare grand for a NEQ6 or CGEM so I won't be able to autoguide the 10" Newt for the foreseeable future.

Planning to get an 80mm Apo Refractor early in the new year, so should be good to go as far as autoguiding is concerned.

Aye, there is coma in the edges. The shot has already had a fair bit of cropping, but wanted to leave a large-ish star field in there. Coma is to be expected with newts though. A corrector will have to wait until other priorities are knocked off the shopping list!

Thankyou ThatDrGuy. I was apprehensive wrt getting to grips with photoshop, but found some great tutorials on astrocasto.blogspot.com that helped explain things very well.

To get the long exposures I used a motorised mount along with Astro Photography Tool software.

    Hi

What did you use to stack all the subs?
