Garda Removing Bikes - Lansdowne Road

Had to drive today so go to listen to some of Ray d'Arcy

According to d'Arcy the Guards removed some bikes (four, I think) from the railings of the DART station - presumably for reasons of safety.

So if you locked your bike to those railings and came back to find it gone - it's not been nicked. The Guards have it.

    Just thought I'd share this.

Gardaí were removing bikes locked to posts and railings near Lansdowne Road Dart station on Saturday night before the Leinster match. I presume they are holding all bikes they removed. (I vaguely remember something similar happening during the Queen's visit)

The one in the picture might have been in the way if there was an evacuation of the stadium, but they proceeded to remove all the bikes locked to the railings across the road too - which I thought was a bit much.

Hope the owners get their bikes back and new locks paid for.

Think thats a bit Harsh from the garda there. During the summer myself and my brother cycled to the aviva for a gig. Guards stoped us and said we coulndt bring them any closer as we got to the top of newbridge avenue. One guard told me to go and lock the bikes to the railing on the canal. You know where it would be nice and dark and secluded. So we walked about 30 feet away on herbert road and locked them to a lamp post. Got some pretty dirty looks on the way by from the same guard. Then when we walked along the canal side of the aviva there is a bike rack right outside the enterance to the west stand. Fat lot of good it is there. Any who later when we returned same guard told me if I did that infront of him again my bike wont be there when I come back.

Hope every one gets there bikes back. cant see them getting a penny for the lock though

Did he explain? Is there some law against locking bikes to lampposts?

I imagine they can cite some form of public safety order which classes the bikes as obstructions and allows them to be removed.

No explanation given. But judging by his tone I think it was best that I didnt ask

I had a bike "removed" from Lansdowne train station about 3 weeks ago. Went to the police, but they said it wasnt them. Do you know where the bikes are kept as im sure there is a lot of bureaucracy, one hand doesnt know what the brain is doing?

Mass, dedicated, and secure cycling parking located near or at the venues should have been a part of the planning permission for the likes of Lansdowne Road, Croke Park and the 02.

In the case of the Lansdowne Road rebuild it should have been at least a few hundred to a thousand, with some room to expand further. But then again Lansdowne is probably the most problematic space and access wise to provide this -- both less of an issue at other sites.

Did the people at the station tell you they were removed? There is a chance your bike was stolen if they didn't, the gardai would not be removing bikes from private property, if it wasn't the station themselves then your bike maybe gone.

It was from the lamp post outside the stadium.
It probably was stolen, but I would just like to be able to walk around the storage yard where they keep the bikes they remove, to double check

If the Gardai removed them then they are probably stored in the local station or have been moved to Store st or Shankhill station. Ring them up to see what time you could get a viewing, give a description of your bike, tell them that you heard from a friend that they were removed by the Gardai for health and safety.

By the picture in the thread earlier, it doesn't look like a Garda cutting them off?!? Maybe drop Aviva maintenance an e-mail if possible.

I saw them removing bikes from the railings of the houses across the road from the Stadium last Saturday.

The man cutting the lock was under the direction of a senior member of An Garda Siochana. I have a short video to prove this.

Have not been around the area recently -- are there any garda signs saying don't lock your bike or don't lock your bike x times?

At one point last year I had cause to visit Landsdowne Road, Croke Park, the O2 and the new Convention centre all within a couple of weeks, and couldn't find anywhere decent to lock my bike at any of them.

Landsdown Road - ended up locking it in the grounds of one of the hotels nearby, beside the security guard hut (kind security guard there, the stadium security guards were very unhelpful). The guards did at least warn me that if I locked it to railings, they might remove it.

Croke Park - there's a flimsy bike rack outside the main Hogan Stand entrance, but you can't get access to Jones' road on match days without a Hogan Stand ticket, so that's a bit useless.

The O2 - ended up locking it at the Luas stop

Convention centre - the security guard showed me where the planned cycle-parking was (just not built yet) and then let me lock it to the railings right outside the building, so not too bad.

What particularly annoyed me is that if you look at the websites of any of these places, they harp on about their accessibility and enviornmentally friendly policies and all the rest.

I often lock my bike to the railings at Luke Kelly bridge in Ballybough when going to Croke Park as I couldn't be arsed dealing with the stewards and Gardaí at the end of Clonliffe Road. You probably couldn't ride up Clonliffe Road through the match day crowds anyway. For match days, somewhere to lock your bike under the nose of the Gardaí would do the trick, even if it was outside the security cordon.

I got some stickers for my bike frame.. says Proerty of Anglo Irish Bank, wheels have Bank Of Ireland decals and the saddle says National Irish Bank saddles..
guaranteed the fuzz wont touch that bike for 2 years and without 4 high court actions no matter if they were chained to railings outside say the Dail or even the central bank...

and the police wonder why they have lost the publics respect :-)
