I was laid off almost two years ago. I never signed on as i was just too proud (stupid) and thought i would get a job fairly soon, in the meantime i lived off some savings and then my redundancy came through. At around this time my sister's husband was transferred abroad for work. she has a toddler so i moved in with her and as it turned out, ended up looking after my niece while my sister worked. Obviously as i wasn't claiming any welfare i didn't pay rent and in turn she didn't pay me to look after my niece. In the meantime i was applying for jobs but nothing came of it. Now my sister is relocating to be with her husband and here i am almost two years, not working, earning or claiming anything from the state. I rang the social welfare office and she told me i do need to get in a claim before year end as i do have stamps for 2009 but they stop come jan.

My prob is. Is it a prob that i was babysitting in lieu of bed and board rather than claiming ? Have i defrauded anyone ? Will i not get anything as a result. I know there are ppl who claim the dole and childmind too but i chose not to. Will doing so go against me anyway ?

Provide all documentary evidence of looking for work when you make your claim and write a cover letter to explain your situation, should they disallow you, you should win your appeal but MAKE YOUR CLAIM THIS WEEK

OP here............So i went to offices and was made appoint for today. Went there and met with woman who tbh couldn't have been nicer or more helpful. I thought i'd be grilled like a criminal. She said apologetically that money should be in first week after new year, which i was shocked at, i was preparing for a wait of months.

Now having said that she just took all my stuff and photocopied it, so i could be refused yet , but at least my claim is registered.

The last time i was on the dole was early ninetys and i recall the staff being sour/surly/ snotty but i have to say anyone i've dealt with so far has been very helpful.

Nice to have a good experience for a change......i was dreading it.
