Keep your contacts backed up online - possibility of corruption

Twice in the last two months I've had the contacts in my HTC Desire HD become corrupted. First I would notice that contacts would disappear from storage. However when I dialled the missing contact's number they would appear under a completely unrelated contact. Strange behaviour indeed.

I would then attempt to re-synchronise the contacts but would get the error message that "Sync is currently experiencing problems, it will be back shortly". It would never resolve itself of course.

Advice in the Google forums tells us to clear all the contact data. This will fix the problem, however all contacts will need to be re-synchronised or downloaded from another source. This means that all non-Google Account contacts will be lost. These can include contacts that were entered as phone contacts and are not attached to any external account.

My advice to you all is to enter contacts as Google ones and make sure all contacts are backed up online, as XML or whatever. I'm not sure what the cause of the corruption is but I wouldn't be surprised if HTC Sense was the culprit.

Can they not be backed-up off-line?

They can, but if you have them backed up online or maintained in Gmail you can restore them straight away. It's easiest to keep the most recent set of contacts there as well. Backing up regularly to SD card is an alternative but if you haven't backed up recently then you could lose contacts
