Portlaoise Boardsie spin over Christmas...any interest?

Thinking of organising a Boardsie spin between Christmas and the new year. Date to be confirmed . I think that we should only go ahead if the weather is reasonable. I don't want anyone going up into the Slieve Blooms if the weather is going to be crap.

It's a nice route with two tough climbs. Roads are mostly good but a couple of crappy sections.

    Date to be confirmed.....How about Friday 30th @11AM ? Or Sat 31st?
Start and finish point is at junction 17 on the M7. Midway food court.

Tea & Coffee beforehand if you wish. Lots of options for food afterwards if you are so inclined. There will not be shower facilities but there is a large toilet/washroom area in the foodcourt.

This is not an organised sportive, there will not be a support vehicle, Boards.ie are not affilliated in any way, I personally am not responsible for any loss or damage to you or your equipment, food and drinks are at your own expense, (More disclaimers will be inserted here as I think of them).

Here is the route.....It's 88Km which should be within the grasp for most people this thime of the year. There are two tough 6km climbs though. I'll put up more details as the date gets closer and I will probably ask everybody to stick together until we get to Mountrath which will make navigation a little easier.

Would normally be there, but I have a heap of friends over from Scotland for New Year, and I don't think I can leave them to go cycling. If you're thinking of a few group spins early in the New Year though, please let me know.

    I may be interested.

How fast will it be? I find it difficult to sustain speeds of over 25 km/h and have never been that far before.

So, I'd like to attempt it if there will be others of my speed and fitness that can battle it out together.

    Hi Rich,

I would be a 25km/hr man myself. I was hoping that there would be some interest in this spin and we could have a slower group with me an a couple of faster guys too. Don't know if that is going to happen, there does not seem to be a lot of interest.

If you could manage 60 to 70km solo you will bo ok on the day I'd guess.

That would be great. It would be good to get a Portlaoise/Stradbally group together. 25km/h would be about right for me as well, though if there's a bit of a group, it'll probably be a small bit quicker than that for the same effort. I'll be in touch after New Year.

My speed is around 25 km/h in a group. Did a 50 km spin some weeks back from Newbridge to Rathangan and then back via Kildangan. This was quite flat and the average was 27 km/h. I battled to stay with the group from about 1/3 distance and I was worse for the wear for a week after.

This proposed spin has a couple of daunting climbs and I reckon that I'd be clinging on for dear life at 25 km/h average, even in a group. I'd love to give it a go though. I'm starting to feel the itch to get out there and burn off some Christmas calories. :)
