Can't get rid of this fecker, it attached itself to the right hand side of the address bar.

I removed it in add/remove progs and even after a re-boot it's still there:(

    any ideas lads.

Get revo uninstaller and try to remove it again.

    http://www.revouninstaller.com/revo_uninstaller_free_download.html

It'll do a thorough scan for any sh!t that it leaves behind (reg files).

Also just to be sure run a virus scan afterwards.

Have revo in me toolkit:D opened it but Ask is not showing up in the list.
It is gone out of add/remove progms though.

After updating Revo and opening it after a while, this smilie appeared in it.

This then stayed on my desktop.
Ran malwarebytes and Glary utilities and no infections found.

As soon as I clicked on 'turn off computer' it disappeared but if I stayed logged in it was still there.

Did a restart and it seems to be gone now.

How long is it there? If recent then do a system restore.

Less than a week two at most.

Tried a restore to 7th nov but couldn't be restored as no changes had been made.

From feb 2010 apparently this is the solution but is there any quick fix now:(
We did the usual routine checking of “tool options” [found nothing].
We then went to our control panel. We found and removed the “Ask Toolbar” from our Remove and Add Programs. Still, nothing.

Next we opened a new browser window, and into the address bar we typed, “about:config”
In short, once the list was brought up, we searched for anything with ASK [that refered to the ask.com site] or ask.com, removed it [modify] AND replaced it with Google.

    Problem solved!

    Directions:
Upon opening the list, you’ll see: Preference Name, Status, Type and Value.
Under “Preference Name”, search for: Keyword.URL
Under “Value” it will say, http://toolbar.ask.com/toolbarv/askRedi ... t=&gc=1&q=
Change that by right clicking on it and choosing “Modify”, and changing it to:
    http://www.google.com/search?ie=UTF-8&oe=utf-8&q=

    Before Pic: http://kd8cmv.us/change-aboutconfig_keyword1_found.png
    After Modified: http://kd8cmv.us/change-aboutconfig_key ... hanged.png

Next, in the filter: type in “ask” and look for anything that says ask.com to bring up a smaller, more refined list.

Under “Preference Name” look for “extensions.snipit.chromeURL”.
    It will show: http://toolbar.ask.com/toolbarv/askRedi ... t=&gc=1&q={sear...
Highlight it, and click “Reset”. This will erase the “Value”. Leave it blank. If it doesn’t, then click “Modify” to remove it manually, click “ok”.
(*note, after closing your about.config window, it will be totally removed from the list)

    Before and After: http://kd8cmv.us/change-aboutconfig_key ... emoved.png

Next, in the filter, type in “browser” and under the “Preference Name” look for:
    “Browser.search.defaultenginename”
For the “Value”, it will show ASK, “Modify” it so it says: Google

    Pic: http://kd8cmv.us/change-aboutconfig_key ... odifed.png

Then under “Preference Name” find: “browser.search.order.1” and “Modify” it from ASK to Google

    Pic: http://kd8cmv.us/change-aboutconfig_keyword8_modify.png

Finally, find: “browser.search.selectedEngine” and “Modify” it from ASK to Google

    Pic: http://kd8cmv.us/change-aboutconfig_keyword9_modify.png

    I hope this helps everyone.

    Which browser?

What options do you get when you right click on it?

What options do you get when you click a blank spot up there beside it?

Firefox 7.0.1. just upgraded to 8.0 but it's still there.

With right clicking I get no options.

I googled it and loads of ppl are having problems getting rid.

    It's hardly this easy but...
    goto tools-> add-ons

then check extension and check the ASK toolbar

and click uninstall then restart the firefox

Maybe running anti-malwarebytes or spybot S&S may fix it for you?

You may also be able to hide it by going to view - toolbars and deselecting the ask toolbar if it's a toolbar

This. It's not that hard really.
    or
    Delete Firefox.....all of it.
    or
Try all the Scanners, combofix, winpatrol.....
