I recently got €200 worth of home heating oil. It seems to have run out after only 2weeks, how long should €200 last if the heating is on for 6-8 hrs of the day?? Any opinions or answers would be appreciated.

Depends on a lot of things, size of boiler, last serviced? size of house, insulation ? and all the other things Heinbloed will list for you.

What type of boiler do you have and when was your house built and what type and size of house is it. Sounds unusual to be honest. 200eur of oil roughly equates to 230 litres of oil delivering 2300kWh of energy or 1950kWh if you have a typical Firebird popular boiler with 85% efficiency. These boilers vary in output but on average can give out 25kw per hour if running flat out. If you have poor insulation and no heating controls ie. thermostats then your boiler could use up to 200 kW in 8 hours or 23 litres in an 85% efficient boiler. The boilers own stat will reduce this somewhat by cutting on and out by about 1/3 to 16 litres or so. 16x14 days is 224 litres so to answer your question - yes 200 litres may only last 2 weeks but I suspect you have a poorly insulated house and a simple time clock as your only heating controls.

My heating oil ran out Sunday, I got 250euros worth on the 21st October but the boiler wasn't turned on till two weeks later. It's only ever on for an hour at a time, max three hours per day. It's a Grant 50-90 boiler (think that's the model?) and I live in a three bed semi detached house. Am I crazy or should that not happen? Someone mentioned if there's lots of white smoke/vapour coming out of the boiler it's bad, I did notice this alright. My landlord uses his nephew who is a plumber to do odd bits around the house but I'm wondering if he might have missed something. Don't think the boilers been serviced lately but there's been a new burner and water pump put in in the last year as I had to get a friend to do it. Any advice would be great as I'm now gonna be frozen for the winter!!

ok, I know this is a few months old, but I just spotted it and will reply anyway..

two years ago I ordered 200 Euro of home heating oil. It lasted approx 5 weeks, couple of hours a day, mainly in the evening.

When it ran out I ordered 200 Euro's worth from another company, this only lasted me 3 weeks. I thought that this was strange.

I started keeping track of how long the same amount of oil would last me ordering it from different oil companies.. there are 4 in our area. I got varying results from 3 weeks to 6 weeks (almost).

So what I do now is go with plastic drums over the border and take it back in my car. I get 100 litres for €80... and I know that I am getting what I pay for.

I think there is going to be a big increase on this skull-duggery very shortly.

The problem you get when ordering a small delivery is that the delivery charge is built into the price, 200€ minus 50 for delivery get you 150€'s worth, thats not a lot, different firms charge different delivery charges.
