    Hi,

    Hopefully someone can help here.

I have a person interested in my car who is from Germany.

He wants to take the car from Ireland through France and on to Germany.

The only problem he is having is getting insurance on the car to bring it to Germany.
His insurance company said they won't insure the car as it doesn't have export plates.

Can anyone please advise on this.

    Thanks

Most Insurance companies cover using a car temporarily in Europe for up to 30 days so let him do that and let him worry about getting it changed to German plates in his own time.

Your legal obligation / interest in the car goes when he drives it away from you.

His insurance said they would insure his car if he was exporting it, but as he is importing a car that is not registered in Germany they said no to that.

Tell him to hire a low loader, and expect to hear no more from him - 95%+ chance its a scam attempt.

He is planning on viewing it first.
No its not a scam. He is also a well know member of the Supra Owners club.

His insurance company said they won't insure the car as it doesn't have export plates.

Insurance companies usually refuse to deal with something out of the ordinary. In Germany there is a special plate and insurance scheme for cars for export ...they simply won't accept that this scheme doesn't exist here.

Unless you/he can work something out with an Irish insurance company, I don't see this deal happening.

Do you know of any insurance company here that might give him insurance for his journey home.

    They all will

Don't forget by law all policies sold over the internet have a 7 day cooling off period. But it would be dishonest if they where to buy it and cancel when they get home so I can't advise them on what to do.

Its becoming increasingly common now for Irish cars to be bought for export to Germany, Norway etc - the market is is totally depressed, so theres bargains to be had for them - especially on bigger engined japanese stuff. My mates 350z just got bought by a German lad.

Tell him to get one of these, or at least to look into it.

A 5-day plate called "funf tages zulassung" in German. The main problem is that its only 3rd party insured. There is more info on it here for him in German.

I've used them a good few times, both for exporting cars from Germany and delivering them to Germany.

The biggest problem is that the 5 days start from the moment you get them in the office in Germany, but he should have enough time to get them, fly here and drive back, ferry included.

Make sure you deregister the car properly here, take the insurance disc out and get Shannon to change the log book.

I had a similar situation with a Belgian buyer of a classic car i brokered the sale of earlier this year.

He could not get it insured in Belgium until it was on Belgian plates.
He paid extra for me to ship it to Dover where he met me out of the chunnel with a trailer and he trailered it back thru' the chunnel and back home to Belgium.

pm me if you need the car shipped to the uk OP to ship it onwards, I can assist you there.

    hth's

I have contacted the AA about their ZZ Plates and they said you can only get them on unregistered cars. Once the car is registered here you can't get them.

Yes. But only 3rd party, I dont think even fire and theft are covered.

They are well known in Germany just tell him to enquire about getting them.

He reckons he will be stopped at the border entering Germany with those plates.
Have you had any problems with that.

No. He can either try to go over at a quiet border crossing or have it trailered from the border to his house. If he is a member of the ADAC (German AA) he could arrange something with them.

OP, I'd advise you to be very wary about getting involved in such a matter.

Let the insurance be a problem for the buyer of the car. You get involved and it could come back to bite you.
