It's my brother who is buying. I know he likes the Golf alright. What year would he potentially be able to get for that money?

I guess we're talking high mileage cars with this particular budget

Theres a premium on anything diesel at the moment and the country is VW obsessed it seems! Looking on carzone most 02 & 03 models are around 3.5k or so

like this one (just an example - no connection to the car etc)

High miles is all relative. I wouldnt class a 10 year old diesel car with 120k miles as "high mileage"

Those Golf TDI's carry such a premium at the moment for what they are. If it were me I would be looking at something a little less common like a Citroen C5 HDI or the likes. Those Golfs are fetching silly money these days...

That looks good. Yeah I get what you're saying about the mileage, I presume how the car has been looked after is much more important

That one that is posted at 3950 looks worth the money if it is as good as it looks. Having had a few citroens I would be slow enough to recommend them. They are a lovely smooth car to drive but overall I feel the quality is not in them. Simple things like door locks , windows, suspensions etc can be more complicated than needs to be. There is little doubt that even though the Golf are plain enough and not to nicest of drives, they will last and if you're driving in Irish roads that helps. Focus are also a fine car and you may get a diesel 02 or 03 one for that money. Trouble is for that money whether you go Golf , Citroen or Focus , there's gonna be a lot of miles on the clock and I think they Golf carries the miles better than many :o

I traded in a 2005 Citroen C5 2.0l HDI earlier this summer. I reckon one about that age could be bought straight (no trade in) for your budget. Seroiusly economical & very comfortable. They don't have a great name so serious depreciation applies but I had no major issues in 2 years of ownership. I bought it very cheap & lost very little in 2 years. You need to be mechanically sympathetic to own a French car (IMO). Plenty of alarms but once you turn engine off & back on, it always cleared the alarms for me.

You will get better value in a Passat/Avensis sized car. You would get a 05/06 Mondeo for €4kish with sub 100k miles.

a seat leon or tolledo will usually be a bit cheaper than the golf for much the same car..

Anything VAG and diesel tends to be overvalued. I'd be looking towards the PSA diesels to be honest.

    For example:

Excuse my ignorance, what does PSA diesel mean?

It's bascially Peugeot & Citroen's parent company similar to VAG which consists of VW, Audi, Skoda, etc.

I guess with €4000 to spend its better to go private. Buying from a garage will really limit options but there is the risks associated with buying from a private individual

A PSA diesel ? Want loads of space, loads of extras, less than €4k, less than 100k miles ??

    http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/cars/2642131

Drive one of these myself and love the space - not the most fashionable, but I'm not bothered with that...
