So my laptop is ready for me this christmas and i'll look forward to running bf3 on it hopefully with smooth frames + graphics.

I need a CLEAR answer though that :

1.Will it run smooth on reasonable settings?

2.If so, What frames? Detail of textures? etc...

Im simply posting this as i posted on steam forums last night and was told i'd be getting around 20 frames on low

    Thanks
    Thomas

    Hi OP

    just stick with reccomended settings

Graphics Card: DirectX 11 compatible with 1024 MB RAM (NVIDIA GEFORCE GTX 560 or ATI RADEON 6950)

Yeah, 20-30fps on low sounds about right for laptop resolutions. At 1080p it probably wouldn't run it at all. The 540m is a pretty terrible graphics card, the 2GB of RAM is just manufacturer bull**** to try and make it sound better than it actually is.

OP depending on your resolution the game will run on medium-ultra textures, with everything else on medium/high and low or no AA. This with a steady 30 FPS at least. I BS you not. Best way to check these things is just look up some gameplay vids on YouTube.

It would only run at anything close to medium-high if you're at something like 1024x800, and even then I'd doubt you get higher than 30fps. The 540m is a terrible card for gaming, seriously.

The minimum reccomended spec for desktops are HD3870/8800GT level-cards, both of which are more powerful that the GT540m.

You'll get it running alright but I wouldn't expect too much, you'll should be to get playable framerates on low-medium settings @1366X768 but not much more than that I'd say.

Oh ye of little fate. Laptop graphics have come a long way, I understand if your used to playing on desktops you might still believe cards liike the GT 540m are crap, but please watch this then.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dTZl04MF-88 Settings at 1:10

    ......and another on ultra.

and one more on ultra/high settings.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XXFG8YAQI7Y

Most laptops have a resolution of 1366x768 so that's what you can expect from that.

Most laptops have a resolution of 1366x768 so that's what you can expect from that.

First video is 100% bull****, he has everything on Ultra, x16 AF and gets 40fps? He's lying about his system specs.

Second video doesn't show the resolution, so its not much good. I'd guess its less than 1366x786 though.

Third video seems pretty consistent with what I would expect. 30fps with high settings, no AA/AF, 1280x600. Bump that resolution up to 1366x768 and you are looking at 30fps low-medium like I said.

Thanks but I know exactly what to expect from a GT540m, because is in roughly in the same performance league as a HD4670 / HD5570 desktop card, neither of which can achieve playable frame rates on low settings @1680X1050.

    http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/battlefield-3-graphics-performance,3063-9.html

You could probably squeeze out medium settings @1366x768 with either of these cards but that is about it, which pretty well as I said.

Still not convinced , then scroll down to the bottom of the next link where you will see benchmarks for BF3 @1366x768 for an ASUS K53T with a HD6650M (almost identical to the GT540m) and and Asus U36 (with a GT520m), hitting averages of 35 FPS and 17.4 FPS respectively.

1st video, maybe but if you like at the description you'll see he's overclocked the card and he's only playing campaign.

2nd, You won't find laptop with the Gt 540m and a resoultion of less than 1366x768.

3rd No you said it would be lucky to get 30fps on laptop resoultion (1366x768 is the most common), on low settings. Not the medium-high I'm showing it can get.

    @Marco Polo
    2 things.

    1. First I'd prefer you look up some benchmarks for the card itself rather than benchmarks for other cards then saying their comparable. http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-GT-540M.41715.0.html Scroll to the bottom you'll see BF3 gets about 25 FPS on medium with AFx4. Turn off AF (with for most isnt a big deal) and you'll hit 40 FPS.

    2. Nivdia have constantly released drivers for this card improving its performance significantly since launch.

Anyway, with all that said I think we can agree the card at 1366x768 well run BF3 on medium solidly and high less so but still doable.

Is their something special about Battlefield 3 that makes the GT540m magically start vastly outperforming very similar cards? Your point seems all the more silly when the links you provide below agree completely with what I was saying.

Based on a link that shows it getting a good deal less than 30FPS at those exact settings and claiming that AF X4 causes a 40% performance hit? I can't say I agree at all. That all suggests that the default medium setting are hardly even doable.

I am telling you this card will run the game on at least medium.

Two more vids to prove it.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nyeTexZFDQ4&feature=related

This one is with a GT525m, (a lower clocked GT540m) and it even can get 30 FPS on medium. [URL="http://www.youtube.com/watch?

    Are all these people lying?

    1. Even overclocked and playing single player will not get you those framerates, nothing less than a 570M will.

    2. Just because the laptop is 1366x768 doesn't mean he's running the game at 1366x768

    3. You have a video of someone getting 30fps on medium high at 1280x600. Considering that 1366x768 is 30% more pixels, you have proved my point, not yours.

Next video you posted shows a mixture of low and high getting less than 30fps. The 2nd link is broken.

I have stated multiple times now that he would probably just about get a playable 30 FPS on the medium preset at a resolution of 1366x768.

Linking to a few videos that have shadows set to low, post AA low, deferred AA off, motion blur off, SSAO off and trying to claim it is medium/high just because a few other settings are set to high, of which only about 2 (Effects and Mesh Quality) have an much impact on frame rates, is a distortion of the facts.

The following is a description of what the default high preset settings are, and none of the videos you them setting turned up to anything remotely near this level.
    http://www.geforce.com/Optimize/Guides/battlefield-3-tweak-guide

At High, the biggest change is the added depth and realism in the scene due to more accurate shadowing via the implementation of HBAO, along with the improved detail which High Shadow Quality brings. Meanwhile Texture Quality rises and Anisotropic Filtering reaches its maximum of 16x, making surfaces much more detailed throughout. Not visible in this static screenshot is the fact that Motion Blur has now also been enabled, and object and terrain complexity is slightly higher. High is designed for faster DirectX 11 GPUs.

Alright lads fair enough you've made you're points. At least the OP has a good few sources to look at now and a better idea if how it'll run.

Thanks for all the replies everyone.

I will be playing BF3 at a res of 1366x768.

I am most concerned about the framerates and playability. I don't care to much about the settings as BF3 looks great on medium still.

So will I get around 30+ frames on medium settings at 1366x768?

    Thanks!
