Its the same one Simon Bates uses on an identical slot on Smooth radio in the Uk.

Gareth's slot is a blatent rip off of it.

    Theme from Romeo and Juliet.

    A.

Yep, the Romeo & Juliet movie from the late 60s. The music is by Nino Rota, probably most famous for The Godfather soundtrack.

Yeah Simon Bates has been doing Our Tune for decades by now - used to be on BBC radio. I remember RTE partially ripped it off in the 90s, calling it Your Song to an instrumental of the Elton John song.

I remember Viz did a hilarious piss-take of Our Tune... :pac:

I honestly dont know how Gareth keeps a straight face reading out his 'your song'. I wonder do they do a rota system in the office when creating these great works of fiction. Its hilarious they way he describes how the listeners feel ie and Mary was overcome with joy when her 2nd cousin twice removed arrived at her door whilst the Beach Boys played in the background. Seriously they go on for 10 mins -must be hard making new stuff up every day.

He was doing that tripe 20 years ago on his 2fm show and it was crap then....really awful stuff to listen to.

The tone he uses when reading out these stories annoys me. Hard to describe it in text but it grates

Well he keeps a straight face because they're quite serious stories usually. Knowing Gareth personally as I do, I can tell you that they're certainly not 'works of fiction', much as you may like to believe it, and he's getting more than enough by email to keep that slot going in stories for plenty of time to come.

BUT he is indeed ripping off (a) the idea (b) the sentiment and (c) the music from Simon Bates! Selective answering to the points raised for a station you work for.

I'm sorry, but what am I 'selectively answering'? What's the question?

Very little in radio is completely original these days. I'd say the majority of Irish radio listeners couldn't care less if a UK based DJ did a similar (or indeed identical) slot on a UK based station that they never listen to. It's not as if Ray Foley's listeners are up in arms for him sounding too similar to Chris Moyles (or whoever). Frankly, I'd sooner say that Gareth's Your Song slot is "inspired by" Simon Bates than a "rip off" but there you go - people tend to look for the negative and hone in on that. Gareth does it for an Irish audience and does it quite well in my opinion.

Anyway, whatever about your "selective answering" jibe, the OP's question was about the bed for the piece - and it's been answered. Anything else, including calling the slot a "rip off" is off topic, isn't it?

The Selective answering was based on the points raised about Gareth keeping a straight face and in you come with the 'I know Gareth personally'. Yes we know you work in 4fm so you had chosen to reply to other posters questions about the legitimacy of the emails yet you did not acknowledge the 'ripped off of an idea'

To take your point about Ray Foley V Chris Moyles. Ray Foley does not call his Show 'The Chris Moyles Show', nor does he take ideas that Chris will use and use (a) the same name (b) the same music and (c) the same sentiment. Whatever about Ray Foley copying Chris Moyles, he does not do so so blatantly. Gareth on the other hand does so with no regard for what anyone else thinks. So maybe nobody in Ireland is up in arms over this, but this is a radio board and we talk radio here!!

Finally, yes all other questions are off topic, so will you come in now and swing your axe at the people that are even slightly critical about 4fm?

I think Gareth is a lot less irritating than many radio personalities, I just wish he'd dump the godawful applause, it's almost partridge-esque.

My response was relevant as someone accused Gareth of making the letters up. He doesn't. I didn't mention working in 4FM, I mentioned knowing Gareth personally and I chose to respond to that one particular point from one particular poster and not others at the time... so?

On the other point, Foley isn't the only example... most radio shows borrow ideas from elsewhere. Again... hardly a big deal.

No, but I may if you start to troll, continue to pointlessly pick an argument or otherwise break the rules. Chill out.

Folks, the thread was about the bed, not the slot or an excuse to have a go.

Thanks to those who answered, and mods can we close the thread now?
