New monitor, games too "bright."

Hey everyone, I wonder if anyone has seen anything like this before. I recently upgraded my monitor from a 14inch Dell 1024*768 to a newer Dell monitor 1280*1024 (but be assured that the monitor is the only thing that says "Dell" on my rig). It also involved a transition from VGA to DVI signalling.

In any case I'm more than satisfied with the extra on screen real estate, but a slight problem that I have is that all my videos, if shown in full screen with VLC media player (DirectX?) and all my games show too "brightly." It's just these AFAIK and the effect is that in low-light parts of the game/video it looks "washed" in some way, washed colours, too bright, blocky appearance etc.

Any advice? Edit: I already tried changing the colour and contrast settings on the monitor, nothing can be done, it's just something DirectX does when it's invoked I think.

When in VLC, if you change the gamma setting down
(Tools, effects and filters, Video affects, image adjust) does it adjust the video more to your preference?

What graphics cards (AMD/ Nvidia/Intel) are you using?

    It's an nVidia GeForce 550(Ti I think)

does it look like that when you do a screen grab?

Depends on how I take the screen grab - most of the programs I'm having the issue with have a "Take snapshot" function which shows the pictures as they should have looked in game. But when I use the PrintScreen button (like in VLC) the problems with videos show in it.

Check the Nvidia control panel, there are colour settings in there. You can have the graphics driver or the programs control the colour individually, so maybe if you have the graphics card handle colour across the board.
