BMW 335i Problem (Again!)

Ok as some of you are aware I had what I thought was a problem with the fuel pump in my 335i.

Anyway I brought the car in and had it looked at - turned out there was a recall on the injectors. So 6 injectors were changed under the recall.

Since then I've had the car back in twice with the same sluggish start issue.

The dealer has said that the fuel pump is ok and that they can't get the pump to fail. Fine.

Since I've had the injectors replaced I've had issue with starting the car from cold - it's feels jerky or rough when I start it. The rev counter tends to jump all over the place for a while and then it's ok. Under acceleration I tend to get an engine fault and reduced power. If I accelerate from, say, 80 - 140 in 3/4th gear and it changes gear @ 140 I get the engine fault sign up and reduced power.

Any ideas what it is? At this stage I'm just really pissed off with the stupid problems!

    Any comments much appreciated.

Shane I have been there its a pain, the coil pack should have been replaced at the same time as the injectors, also new plugs never hurt. The HPFP problem is more common with american cars but this injector problem is a nightmare.

    The symptoms I had were
    1. CEL without any feeling of an issue.
    2. Shaking of the car especially at low speed.
    3. Idle rough as a badgers arse.
    4. Misfires.
    5. Hesitation at around 2300 revs on acceleration.

I have to say that a bottle of injector cleaner and avoiding maxol fuel did the trick for me on several occasions, but I had 6 injectors, 6 plugs and 6 coil packs replaced out of warranty for free by BMW Ireland.

However I forgave the 335i as the engine is a work of art.

Well I'm finding it difficult to forgive it at the moment!

Your more than welcome to take mine of my hands if you like!!

Yup I have most of the problems you mentioned.

The hesitation is a bitch but at the moment if I accelerate hard I end up hitting an engine fault which reduces the power.

Could this be related to the wastegate/actuator issue with the n54. Seems to be a common problem and can give starting issues and an 'overboost' fault.

My mechanic did find an over boost fault on mine at one point alright, however I never had a problem with the "rattle waste gate problem". On the maxol fuel thing, the ethanol additive makes it burn cooler and thus not burn as completely, this has been speculated to clog injectors???? I don't know but avoidance worked for me, I tended to texaco with techron.

The main problem here Shane is that BMW want to replace only the problems that show on the diagnostics one at a time. I kicked up stink, said I was a internet forum contributor, said I would start a jihad if they didn't replace all injectors, coil packs and plugs with the improved parts available. Also make sure the update the software with the very latest version. Best way to ensure that is to complain that the iDrive is lagging and the reversing sensors come on late, this is a TSB.

Have to say I had maybe 3 months of twoing and frowing to the dealers, I did a lot of research on e90 forum and when eventually BMW did the correct thing (all out of warranty BTW so I have to say it was more than fair) the car ran perfect......then some twat nicked it.

Childish I know, but bad press is about the only weapon you have out of warranty.......the conversation goes...."so I am a member of this bmw/car owners internet forum and I was asking there what the problems is and telling my experiences at this dealership, and a few experienced guys said that BMW would fix all these problems as a gesture of good will cause there are so many problems with the N54 injectors"....blah blah blah...its a thinly veiled threat ;)

A very decent tactic in fairness :)

    Much appreciated.

Do you use a mechanic outside of the BMW dealers?

Only for the hope of getting BMW to cover the cost of the repair I'd be gone to an independent at this stage.

Shane I now it's prob too far for you to travel but Bolands in Waterford have a very good master technician. He did all the trouble shooting on the clutch on my x1 and would have no probs recommending them

OK so I got word from Joe Duffy today about my car.

Turned out it was the fuel pump in my car that was gone. It's a pain in the ars* that you have to wait for it to fail before they'll replace it. I came in about the fuel pump problem about 3 months ago at this stage!

Anyway the car was fixed and BMW are covering the cost of whole thing.

I've had 6 injectors and a fuel pump replaced out of warranty for by BMW.

While it's been a bit of a pain in the arse over the last very months I must say that despite the odd annoyance Joe Duffy have been quite helpful - delivering my car out to me on the other side of the city on a number of occasions etc...
