Former Formula One driver JJ Lehto has been jailed for causing a drunken boat crash in June 2010.
The judge at Lansi-Uudenmaan district court said the 45-year-old Finn was drunk and speeding when his powerboat hit a bridge on a canal in Ekenäs, killing his passenger.
Lehto, who appeared in court under his full name Jyrki Juhani Järvilehto, said that he was a passenger in the boat at the time, but his claim was rejected. The court decided that the injuries received by Lehto and his passenger indicated that Lehto had been at the helm when the crash happened and was sentanced to two years and four months.
JJ Lehto took part in 62 Grand Prix for Onyx, Scuderia Italia, Sauber, and Benetton between 1989 and 1994, and went on to win the 24-hour Le Mans race in 1995 and 2005. He is expected to launch an appeal against the court's sentence.

A bit of a shocker. Was on my holidays in Finland once for two weeks and they are very reserved but we got the boat to Estonia and when they drink they REALLY drink. I remember this case. Bit sneaky of him to claim that he wasnt driving if he was (if thats true).

He was lucky to get out alive himself they say he hit the bridge at 40 knots in a 5 knot zone at 3.30am after leaving a restaurant

Crikey, the state of that boat

I was looking forward to seeing how Letho would have performed in the Benetton B194. Unfortunately injuring his neck in pre-season testing didn't help his time at Benetton.

Wow! Kinda feel sorry for him, particularly looking at the state of the boat.

    Long way to fall...

Looks like 'Jos the Boss' is also in a spot of bother with the law.
