i want to be 100% sure,

you know these companies/people who advertise that they unlock iphones for €15 or whatever price,

are they jail-breaking or are they getting unlock codes from somewhere or how do they usually do it.

im trying to convince a friend to go through their network to unlock rather then go through with this method. is there a benefit to this?

they can't unlock them with a code and are doing it by jailbreaking and installing a package called ultrasn0w

if your friend updates his phone it will be locked again

Your friend would be wise to take your advice, assuming that they fulfill the criteria which would make them eligible for approval. Obvious benefit is that it will remain unlocked to any carrier; jailbreak or future updates cannot undo this unlock method. It is also referred to as "Official Apple Unlock", and cannot be reversed.
