I came across this article today.

    http://www.cultofmac.com/129745/horrible-iphone-4s-battery-life-is-caused-by-software-not-hardware-heres-the-proof/

Basically they got 2 4S's. One with battery issues one without.
They restored the bad one from a backup of the good one and it fixed the battery issues.
This proves its a software issue and can be fixed by an update. So why hav'nt Apple done it?
Maybe all us 4S brothers and sisters need to get together and fix our own problem as Apple dont seem to really care.

Have a read and if you have a lucky friend who is not on their second 4S with battery issues like me, maybe you could try restoring from their phone and let us know what happens.;)

article is a month old and there has been a software update to specifically tackle battery issues and it's called 5.0.1. if people are still having problems after that then i'd believe it's a hardware issue as opposed to software and those affected are in the less than 0.5% of iphone 4S users.

I've never had any problems on 5.0 or 5.0.1

No problems here, but I think Apple have acknowledged there are some remaining battery-related issues. Reseting all settings has fixed it for some people.

Well like I said Im on my second iphone. I just got a replacement on thurs and it lost 40% battery overnight on standby. At 0.5% how unlucky does that make me.

Its also well known that 5.0.1 doesnt fix the problem. I wish it did. I am willing to try anything at this stage.

5.0.2 was (supposedly) seeded to developers that might fix battery issues, but was reportedly held back due to memory leak issues.

my 4s running 5.0.1 runs no slower than my old ip4 running 5.0, even with everything turned on..

Guys it's almost certainly software. I got an upgrade from my iPhone 4 to an iPhone 4s, just restored the iPhone and got dreadful battery life eg went to bed with 100% battery work up with 50% battery. Was like this for a few days so I had enough since I have an apple developers account I decided to take a chance on the latest beta 2 of the iOS 5.1 and it's been great. Though I also setup the phone from scratch ( which was a pain ) but now the phone is still say 95% after a full night with charging and probably lasts longer than my previous iPhone. So in my opinion it's definitely software a combination of setting up the phone again with the latest build from apple has more than sorted the problem

Could be anything from a few days to a few weeks. Apple keep this all secret so nobody knows.
