    Hi there,
this is my second thread so I'll try my best to describe my problem. Well we recently bought a top of the range led tv the Samsung D8000 series. The main reason we got this was because it had mpeg4 in it therefore it could recieve saorview we wanted. Anyway, we set it up and set the country to Ireland and did multiple scans and we could not pick up rte or any Irish fta channels only rte on annalog but it is unwatchable. I'm situated in Co. Monaghan, town area. We also got a triax tv tuner with mpeg4 and mheg5 for our older tv and it still wouldn't pick up rte or saorview aswell. I'm thinking this might be an aerial issue but we have a UHF and VHF ariel up there and the UHF is only about 6 years old.
    What do you guys think?
Any advice would be very much appriciated
    Thanks!

Unwatchable analogue and no Saorview with a Saorview approved receiver sounds like an aerial issue.

Where are the aerials located, external or attic?

Are the VHF and UHF aerials pointing at the same transmitter or is the UHF aerial being used for the UK channels from NI?

Are the aerials in good condition? If so, I'd start with the co-ax - is it in good condition? Have you checked all the connections from the aerial to the TV point? Are there any aerial combiners, masthead amps or distributions amps in the system - faulty unit or bad connection somewhere in the system?

    thanks for replying,
The aerials are located in the attic
I'm not sure where they are pointing towards now but we do recieve crystal clear brittish channels and all there radio stations.

I'd say the aerials are in good nic, we have 4 televisions in our house and the connections would be quite old, for some reason we get better connections in different rooms oldly.
We have had sky HD for years now if that it causing an issue I don't nobly we get rte on sky no problem:/.
    Can I ask what is a co-ax?

It's short for co-axial, it's the cable that runs from your aerial to the TV set.

Ok, well all I know about them is that there quite old I think the aerials a pointed towards the mast head in dundalk, I also think the VHF aerial is over 10 years old. Do you need to upgrade the aerials to get saorview?

If you can receive UK Freeview with an attic aerial in Monaghan, it will be pointing at the Divis transmitter in Belfast. The VHF aerial would usually be pointing in a southwesterly direction for the Monaghan transmitter (on high ground near Corcaghan).

You need a UHF aerial for Saorview, either wideband or the correct channel group for whichever transmitter you receive from.

Come next Oct you won't need the VHF aerial at all, all TV will be in the UHF band so no point in upgrading it now. I guessing the VHF is for the two analogue RTÉ channels from the Monaghan transmitter. The VHF aerial will also not be required now if you receive the Saorview signal and all TVs etc in the house have been upgraded for Saorview.

I'm not sure what Saorview reception is like using an attic aerial from the Monaghan or Clermont Carn transmitters in your area, an externally mounted aerial is normally recommended.

The RTÉNL Saorview coverage checker recommends the Monaghan transmitter for your area with Group C/D UHF aerial pointing SW.

A regular poster here, Peter Rhea, from Monaghan should be able to give you better advice regarding Saorview reception in your area (EDIT - which I see he has while I was writing this post).

I wonder is the OP's poor VHF reception caused by problems with the aerial system rather than lack of available signal: probably wouldn't be a good sign as regards reception of higher freqs. from the Monaghan site but these things can be unpredictable.

Certainly OP, don't be tempted to try for Saorview with the 'Northern' aerial, as it will most likely be the wrong channel group & you mightn't get it back in the 'sweet spot' if you move it.

    Thanks for replying,
I have just discoverd that our UHF aeriel is pointed towards Belfast and this is problely the main reason why we can't get rte. we've bought a new UHF aerial so we can have one pointed at Belfast and one pointed SW so we can get rte. I will try this today and post my results.
    Thanks again:)
