The bible, written by stoners?

What do you think, would you say that the bible could have been written by a load of fellas off their head on pot and hallucinogens? Face it, a lot of the tales from the bible told by prophets and whatnot, supposedly based on real world supernatural/ religious events, sound strikingly similar to stories you would hear from somebody who had been fecked off their heads on drugs.

People have been getting off their face for thousands of years so yeah..the bible being wrote by a group of 'stoners' is as likely as anything else.

John Allegro, the author, makes the argument that Christianity got its start as a subterfuge used by ancient Jews to hide their true religion from the Romans. He argues that they created an imaginary fertility cult based around the usage of the amanita muscaria, or "magic" mushroom. Then, by an ironic twist, the "fake" religion caught on and took on a life of its own. I think this quote does a good job of summing this up:

"The whole point of a mystery cult was that few people knew its secret doctrines. So far as possible, the initiates did not commit their special knowledge to writing. . . . When such special instruction was committed to writing, care would be taken that it should be read only by members of the sect. This could be done by using a special code or cypher, as in the case with certain of the Dead Sea Scrolls. However, discovery of such obviously coded material on a person would render him suspect to the authorities. Another way of passing information was to conceal the message, incantations, or special names within a document ostensibly concerned with a quite different subject.

So you've never heard of the crusades, inquisition, witch burnings etc. then I take it? And I doubt the Soviet Union killed people in the name of atheism. For political reasons, yes, but for not adhering to atheism, I highly doubt that.

End up reading what? The Bible or the Q'uaran. In a sentence such as the one you have constructed where you have introduced two items, it is usually better to differentiate between which of the two you are referring to as you are concluding.

Well imagine if Ireland's history was entirely atheist and not Catholic, imagine where we'd be today. It wouldn't be a good place.

I disagree with your 2nd check, there are good priests out there who are geniune. I don't agree with you saying the Catholic Church abused children for decades.

Yeah our history would have been dreadful wouldn't it, Belfast would have been a war ground had we all been atheist as opposed to having religion. :rolleyes:
