AFAIK the 535d only ever came in auto. I have never seen a manual version and I think I remember reading somewhere that it didn't have a manual for a certain reason that I can't quite remember now...

Every BMW is an odd ball, check the factory cert under the rear seat base for details of its build.

not got yet , dealer says its a manual but i too believed they were all auto

Think there wasn't an auto because the manual transmission wasn't up to handling the torque.

there was no manual 535d built in the E60.
The dealer is either bull sh1ting you or clueless :D or is it possible he is mixing a 530d up with a 535d?

2004 535d is the 272bhp version, please post a link to have a view.

The basic motorcheck.ie check should give the transmission details

All auto. BMW didn't have a manual box that could handle the torque. Amazing but true.

Why would anyone want a manual 535d anyway?

A manual would actually make it an interesting car, can you imagine the in gear acceleration of the thing!

No they have the gearbox and clutch its just that the average 535d driver cannot feather in a clutch with such torque and dumps it onto the clutch leading to loads of indignant customers wanting replacements. Solution auto only, you have more than enough to do without trying to change gear. The 335d is a high milage cruser not a dedicated sports car and the buyers are the same.

sounds low, but could be a good car depending on spec and history.
any link to the car or is it a friend of a friend?

awaiting pictures and more info, would be early next week now,

its a english car and miles are motorway and full service history.

still does not seem expensive when this guy is looking nearly 9000 with only 9k less miles on it and he says his is a bargain lol

again, it depends on the spec of the car. the car you linked is an MSport model with Sat Nav, cant see enough of the front end to see if it has xenons, and cant see enough of the centre console behind the gear stick to see if it has heated seats. it also has the upgraded 19" 172M wheels.

What model is the car your getting offeres? is it SE or MSport? leather? bluetooth? Xenon? Sat Nav? etc etc

Was chatting to a few people before buying my 320cd up north 3 months ago, they said it's a good time for buying atm. The one thing to look out for is, while the miles might be high, it's probably mostly done on motorway up there which is 100x better than here, they just salt/grit their roads a lot better so have a good look for corrosion.

Why is it a good time to buy ?

Motorways in the North may have been better 20 years ago but not now.

At the end of the day, most of the North is pretty rural and there's a fairly limited amount of motorway .

I don't know what to expect. I just thought that flooring it in 2nd or 3rd in a manual 535d would be pretty special but maybe you disagree.

............ and flooring it in an auto will be different? ;)

Flooring it in a manual would be a whole lot of a different experience than in an auto though - no?

If the car was already in 2nd or 3rd I wouldn't think so, the in gear acceleration won't be any different to a noticeable degree, in fairness it's not a CVT box after all :)

I thought it would be, maybe I'm wrong though. I would have thought that a manual 530d would be different to an auto 530d. The 535d just being a faster version of that.

I have no qualified idea - just thought it would be interesting with all that torque.

I don't think a whole lot of it is lost through the auto though as such :)

There was no manual version as there (was) no manual gearbox that survive 560Nm torque

Nuts when you think of it as muscle cars were doing that all day every day in late 60's / early 70's with 4 on the floor muncies.

Despite all the good things about the 535D, 130K+ is lot of miles on that car/engine from a re-sale point of view.

Much over 130k Miles or so the value drops out of them (and/or they get reprogrammed back to <100K miles).

Buy it if it's gonna be a keeper for a few years; a cracker of a car when it's 100%.

And the auto box is great - bet you'll prefer it over a manual after a week.

I've been looking over a few of them as my next move!

Get a 530d manual and get the fella in chippedire to map it for you.

He can probably take it to 270bhp and 600nm.

Imagine dropping that into 3rd, 80-120 km/h in a manual:)

600nm manual would be very nice.

Most likely the dealer is calling it a manual as it has paddle shifters....

Dont think the 535d had the paddle shift avaulable to it in 2004?
Or it might of had in later years after the sports box was introduced into the 335d.

Now that would be great fun for at least a week or two until the clutch caved in!

BMW didn't supply a manual box because it couldn't handle the torque but I'm sure a five year old clutch with 100k on it would be well up to the job:rolleyes:

That's just fast, if OP wanted fast he would get a high powered petrol which would embarrass the 535d.

OP wants a manual, 530d manual is fast enough and a bit of fun for a diesel.

If you did a little bit of research smart arse you would find the clutch is up to the job and an uprated one is well able for the map.

It's the gearbox that torque ****s up not the clutch in the bmw diesel's.

He will have to keep the gearbox in good nick, that's it.
