I've a dual monitor set up and sometimes for no reason, one of the monitors suddenly darkens and isn't as bright as the other one. It only happens sometimes and then resets out of the blue.

Can anyone tell me how to get them to be the same brightness?

check you have the monitors at the correct frequency - 50Hz or whatever , though not really an issue these days as the monitor usually tells you if it's not happy

    how old are they ?

    swap them around,
if the problem stays with the monitor then it's probably not a PC problem, never mind a windows one

models of monitor - google for it with the word capacitor or backlight
    version of windows
    video card
