Laptop Problem

Hi all, my sisters laptop broke down and i've been given the task to get it fixed:rolleyes:

So basically, it won't boot up. When you turn it on, it turns itself off after a few seconds. I've gotten into the menu though and tried a normal restart to no avail (blue screen appears)

I had the same problems years ago myself and i had to pay 50 quid for Dell to walk me through the solution. I think it was basically a rebuild because i lost all my info. Her laptop is only a month or two old but i don't think she paid anything extra for after care or anything. (or do you still have a warrenty?)

Just wondering can i fix it myself without ringing Dell or bringing it to a repair shop?

If it's only a month or two old, it's definitely got a warranty.

If it's only a few months old and was bought from a shop / online retailer, then it should be under warranty.

What make / model of laptop is it?

When you switch it on, one of the Function keys or Escape should allow you to run a diagnostic - this will be listed in the user guide or you can google it.

The diagnostics may establish if there's a hardware issue.

It would be covered by warranty but if sent back to Dell their first action will likely to be wiping the machine, so if you have any files you need on it I would advise using an Ubuntu Live CD to access the Windows drive and pull the files off it, if you need a hand with this post back, its simple enough

If your laptop is still under warranty then phone the manufacturer; with no charge they'll talk to you to try to find out what the problem is.
At the worst they'll talk you thru the restore process and if you can save user files as part of that process.

Oh an as you're still in warranty it's free ;)

Thanks for the replies. I think i managed to fix it. I clicked "Last Known Good Configuration" (think that's what it was called) and it seems to be ok. It ran through all the files and pulled some corrupt ones and replaced them - at least thats what i think it did!
