I am going for a driving exam soon. But I am a little bit confused about the foglights in car.My instructor from poland already told me that it's only one at the rear left. But I am reading online that cars have 2 front foglights and 2 rear foglights.is this true?
How many foglights does a car usually have?
how many lights does a "renault clio" have?

    Thx in advance.

Most cars only have two rear foglights, in Ireland anyway.

Not every car will have front foglights (these are usually optional extra or are on higher spec cars). Where they do it will be two - one on each side of the front of the car.

Also not every car has two rear fog lights. Some do but a lot usually only have one at the drivers side...eg my laguna and my wife's focus only has one on the drivers side whereas the mondeo has two, one in each light. BMWs usually have two also but by law only at least one is required.

My Golf van has no front and one rere foglight. My Merc has two front and two rere. So it varies according to the car, the model, the age.

You don't have to worry about fog lights for the Irish driving test. There's generally 2 front and one rear. Some cars don't have front foglights others do. If your clio does they will be the lights under your headlights which are mounted on the front bumper. Your car may not have them though, they're definitely not a standard option on older cars.

Many jap imports have no rear fogs.
A 206 has just one in the lower middle.

If a car has front foglights fitted (not compulsory) there will always be two.
A rear fog light is compulsory and is usually mounted on the right hand side of the vehicle on a right hand drive car. On a left hand drive car the fog light would be mounted on the left side of the car (which means its in the wrong place if driving in a RHD country). there are also a couple of cars which have a single centrally mounted rear foglight such as the Pug 207 and some cars have two rear foglights fitted.
I don't know about the Clio but I suspect only 1 rear foglight.

if it's an older version of the clio it would have no front fogs and 1 rear on the drivers right afaik.

My suzuki has no front fogs and 1 rear fog. It's on the right hand side, just to the right of the reg plate.

If the car has one reversing light on the left, there's usually a foglight on the other side,

i don't care how many so long as you only turn them on when its foggy.

IF one a rear one is fitted (Euro type approval stuff will, very old stuff/non-EU stuff may not) it will be in the middle or to the right. A pair would be symmetrically placed.

I think a Clio (certainly a 1990s 1st generation) one has what looks to be two from the rear (it has two reversing lights), but the left hand side fog lamp (RHD car) is just a dummy, only the right hand side fog lamp will have a bulb holder & bulb.

Surely you meant the rears???? :pac:

The reason only one is required on the rear is that it is considered preferable to two rear fog lights.

Two rear fog lights could be confused with brake lights - leading to a following car braking suddenly, causing a pile-up.

That's the theory, anyway. I doubt there's much to it.

Have a look around your car with the normal lights turned on.
Then turn on the fogs and have another look....

My car has 2 front and 1 rear. So it really differs from car to car.

Turn your fog lights on.....and count them!

If your clio has front fogs they will be two seperate lamps in the bumper.

I'm not sure you are correct. I had a JDM celica that had no problem getting an NCT with no fog lights. I think if the car comes fitted with a rear fog they must work but if it does not come with any that's not a problem.

A rear fog is not compulsory for the nct. If your came from the factory with one, then it must work but if it didn't, like most japanese or american imports then there doesn't ned to be one fitted.

Cars fitted from the factory with rear fogs(all cars officially sold in europe) can have them on the right side only(for rhd cars) or on both sides.

    True.

    Peugeot 206 is another example.

Fair enough, I'm open to correction on that. When I see a Jap import fitted with an aftermarket one I assumed it was to comply with regs. Never thought a dealer would go to the trouble of wiring them just because he wanted to?

What about pre nct days? late 80's early 90's? I used to work in customs clearance and I know the authorities went to enormous lengths making life difficult (as a result of pressure from SIMI) for dealers importing used cars. I know they used to insist on bulkheads being welded into 205XRAD's to stop them being converted to pax use so the requirement to retrofit a fog light would not be outside the realms of possibility.

There is no law required to have one at all. However if its fitted it must be working as designed.

Many cars will have one rear and some will have two.
Some cars will have two front in addition to the rear ones

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,216 ✭✭✭pcardin

Most cars will have 2 at the front and 1 or 2 at the rear. Some cars won't have front ones as on some makes/models they are optional however truck drivers will fill the gap by installing thousands of them on their trucks. :D

I think a lot of Jap imports came via the UK, for some reason I really can't remember - might have been something to do with tax.

It is a requirement to have a rear fog light there.

Only if first used on or after 1st April 1980.;) Hence why the get stuck on all those JDM imports into the UK.

Indeed, I couldn't find a piece of Irish regulation on it, but Euro type approval means most of the vehicle pool have at least one.

And this explains why if a JDM comes straight into Ireland, it tends not to have one.
