The front door to the Berkeley Library has finally reopened. Access is from Fellows Square only. The main steps from New Square will open next, but the ramp from College Park will remains closed for some time because of the renovation work needed.

About time! I hated having to walk up and around.

Sorry for my ignorance, but why was it closed in the first place? Something to do with the film?

Nothing to do with the movie! As anyone who ever used the tunnel between the Berkeley Library and the Department of Early Printed Books (and dodged the buckets) will know, there has been a long-standing problem with leaks through the Podium outside the Berkeley.

All the stone slabs on the Podium were removed, the leaks were detected and sealed, the area was then flooded to check that the seal was working (http://www.broadsheet.ie/2011/11/17/pondlife/) and then the paving was replaced.

It'll be a while before the ramp between College Park and the Library is reopened - it needs to be made more accessible for wheelchair users. The main steps in front of the Berkeley should reopen soon though.

I think someone told me they were leaking for 20 odd years before they finally decided to do something about it!

I keep meaning to go and have a look at those early printed books. It's meant to be kind of cool!

In all fairness the work that was going on in front of the Berkeley seemed to take about that long.....
