AEG gearbox without grease + when to re-grease?

Hi, i recently greased up an aeg gearbox and i wondered just how much damage could be caused without having any grease on the gears and roughly how long it would last without grease before it just breaks down?

Are there any ways of telling if an aeg gearbox is running low on gears?

Also, when i had the gearbox open, i first put oil on the gears, after about 500 shots, i then put in grease. Was the oil a bad idea?

Sorry if i sound a bit stupid but these are just a few things on my mind that i am a little unsure about.

    Thanks

Some info to be found here and as for oil i'd say its to thin and well just messy because it probably goes everywhere when the gears spin.

Silicon on rubber seals and lithium grease for the gears, you cant really put to much on but don't cover absolutely everything like manufacturers do just make sure the gears are well coated wherever they make contact or rub off something else

As Mr X15 said - silicone oil is for the the o-ring and cylinder only.
Oil simply isn't viscous enough to be used on the gears of an airsoft gun. It will just spray itself all over the gearbox and provide next to no lubrication value. Light oils like that are fine for timepieces and other geared mechanisms under low stress. But for gearboxes use a good quality grease.

I use silicone grease myself - Woodies and B&Q do a small tub of Swan silicone grease for about €3, it's fairly good. White Lithium grease is okay to use aswell but it can get messy if you use too much and it has to be cleaned off and replaced after every 4 games or so. Which isn't bad if you're that way inclined, but for the best, lasting results use the silicone grease.

Edit: Nevermind that - I had been misinformed - it's meant to dry out and operate in that fashion.

Yes the gearbox will work with just silicone oil or you could even run it without any form of lubrication but its life expectence will be very short

Can I suggest that as you used silicone oil only thats why you bought a set of internals for your P90 gearbox

Its the spring pushes the piston and if you have a proper air seal the spring is the only thing that provides the FPS
The rate of fire is determined by the Motor, but having said that a properly shimmed and lubed gear train and piston will reduce the load on the motor and therefore allow it to achieve a higher RPM

is that grease suitable for lubing the gears and the cylinder/piston? First time taking apart a gearbox and of course i do it before i have anything suitable :P
