...should need to either have English as a first language, or be fluent in it to near perfection?

Not trying to be racist, but there is absolutely nothing worse than phoning technical support for a gadget (as I did a few weeks ago) and having to go through the following:

So what do you think, am I just being an intolerant gobsh!te or is this a reasonable remark to make? Good command / pronunciation of the English language as a requirement for call centre stuff?

No it wouldn't be racist. Just a requirement of the employer.

Of course not. If they're job is to answer phones in customer care for Italians, guess what? You gotta learn ****ing Italian.

speaking the language or at least attempting to speak the language of the country you are visiting or living in, and should be the minimum requirement..
    ingnorance is not an excuse...

Ha...I had a couple of vacancies recently for speakers of a particular language, which was an essential requirement for the role in question. But HR told me I couldn't specifically ask for native speakers as it was discriminatory. So I end up getting loads of CVs from people who could barely speak or write in that language and misunderstood key parts of the specs.
You'll always get a few people applying for jobs who don't meet the requirements, but this was beyond a joke.

So what is worse... us wasting people's time with an imprecise job notice or HR wasting employees' time by opening the job out to a wide people who overestimate their language abilities. The employee has to filter out all that stuff and fill out feedback forms, request yet another ad in Monster...it just goes on.
