A great gateway to refereeing for anyone thinking of giving it a go. Couldn't ask for a better bunch to introduce really.
Sunday, January 8th, 2012
St Mary’s College RFC
10:30am.
The Leinster Rugby Referees in association with the IRFU will run a New Referee Recruits Course on Sunday January 8th at 10:30am in St Mary’s College RFC.
Why not join the ranks of Alain Rolland (RWC Final 2007, Assistant Referee RWC Final 2011), Alan Lewis (former International Referee now referee coach), Donal Courtney (former international Referee now ERC Performance manager, David Keane (worlds most capped 7′s Referee) and Dudley Philips (European and International Referee)??
Make it your New Years Resolution – contact David Keane today. You wont be disappointed – it’s the best seat in the house

Are any of the refs listed going to be there or is that just a who's who line up?

Anyone know if there is a minimum age limit for this?

Best advice I can give is to email Dave Keane and he'll answer any queries you might have.

I've seen plenty of 16 and 17 year olds attending meetings and reffing matches. I'd be surprised if there is a limit - like rugby, those who start early have the best chance of making it to the top level.

Looks interesting. I was forced to stop playing rugby a couple of years ago for medical reasons, so I'd love to try this, looks like a great way to stay involved.

What would peoples opinions be of someone who has never played club rugby going for this? I have an interest in rugby and am a gaa referee, but having never been in a scrum i feel id find it difficult to get the technical decisions right. Other than that id love to go for it.

I think you should definetly go for it. Most refs have never played rugby at a high level and were never able to play it a high level - that's why they are refs :-)

Seriously, your g.a.a. reffing would seriously give you a major head start in man management and fitness. The training courses they give are very good and they'll help you with everything.

If you haven't played much rugby my advise would be do a few youths matches before doing adults. The scrums (and pretty much everything) are much easier where's there's no old cynical people about :-)

Judging by this your a certain for the international referee's panel! :D

Just checked this for you and 18 is the recommended minimum age.

Good numbers for this Sunday. Should be good.

Has anyone here done one of these courses before? Is it an all day course? Is it a classroom type thing or is there work done on the pitch etc? I'd be interested to hear from anyone who has done the course.

For our one in Munster a few years ago it's a case of introductions first, then watch videos of scrums, lineouts etc. More or less rules and getting yourself familiar with certain scenarios. Then it was lunch followed by work outside which was something like rucks, mauls, positioning, scrums, lineouts.

You won't get thrown into the deep end and told to ref a game once you've signed up. We did a few games touch judging followed by more courses every 4-6 weeks. I took up refereeing after damaging ankle ligaments and loving every minute of refereeing.

i did it at the start of this year. It wasn't quite a full day course but not far off it. It was a classroom type thing with as much interaction as you wanted via questions from the floor. Small bit of practical stuff re the scrummage but we didn't bother going to the pitch as there was room indoors to do it !! This was followed by 3 or 4 sessions once a month on a Tuesday night for about 1 1/2 hrs each. Glad i did it..... great way to keep involved after you stop playing.

Thanks for the replies kensutz and trevr. I'm heading along on Sunday.
I emailed them and the guy said it is just a classroom situation. I wasn't sure whether I should bring boots etc.:)

edit: By the way trevr, it IS the start of this year. But I know what you mean :)

It went well. I'd say about 40 turned up which was more than I thought would.
Some great talks by a few different established refs.I enjoyed it.
Started at 10 and finished up around 4. We had a couple of breaks in between. We would have finished earlier but there were so many questions from the floor. Some were a bit annoying as they were already dealt with but sometimes at these things Ithink people ask questions for the sake of it.
I don't know why.
All in all I really got a lot out of it. Thanks for asking.

Was chatting to the co-ordinator and he was very happy with how it went.
If anyone wants to try a bit of reffing and to get the hang of how to run a game and hone your comms skills, give tag reffing a go. You can email tagref@irishrugby.ie for more information.

Thats what annoyed me too..... you get the impression that some people are asking questions just to show how much they know ! Enjoy the follow up sessions !
