A tip? Just take the empty glass up to the bar when ordering another one, courtesy is all that's required in this complex social situation.

Not in Ireland. Most of the people I'd be tipping make more than me anyway.

I'd feel like I was propositioning her if I tipped at the end of the night :pac: Complexier and complexier the situation is getting, I don't envy you one bit OP, tell her stay behind the bar and you'll stay to your side

They should just be lucky that you're there and paying for the booze not sneaking it in like some low level stingy student type.

    No tip.

    Never.

Tipping the barman / barmaid, hell No, this isn't America.
Maybe if they didn't charge 4 trillion a pint I'd consider it but no F**K that

Was in new York recently at a Hotel and the bagman held out his hand after dropping bags down to Taxi, cheeky ba$tard I thought, I just high fived him ( down low ) and jumped in the taxi.

I never get tipped nor look for one tbh. I will drop pints down to a table if asked / unasked if there's noone waiting to be served. I get paid to do my job and whilst tips are appreciated I don't think anyone stingy for not tipping nor do I refuse to drop more pints for them etc.

For good service yeah. I'd leave a couple of €uros on the table and leave. That makes it more likely that the waiters/waitresses get it.

I once say a sign that said "Tipping is not a city in China"
    I lol'ed.
Then I saw it in another shop.
    And I lol'ed again.

    It never gets old.
    Ever.

Tip just after getting a five euro pint? Not a fúcking chance! Bit dodgey that she asked for a tip as well, should of said ''I was, but not anymore'' :pac:

That was right cheeky of her, feck that, I might give a tip when the service is good but if anyone asked or stood there expecting one I'd tell them to feck off

Hmmm, bit of misunderstanding going on here methinks. I wasn't asked for a tip. it was just a general question. And for those who want a happy ending, I left five pence ha'penny on the table when we left. 1 pint + potato skins was all the orders.
Which leads to the next instalment, the night club, but I'm not typing all that on my phone.

As a barman I'd like to jump in here and put a few things to rest.

Firstly, your pint can be €1 or €10, nine times out of ten the person serving you has absolutely no say in that what-so-ever. And even if your pint does cost a tenner, i can tell you now the staff aren't on commission. So saying "they charged me too much so i'm not tipping", while i completely understand it, isn't the fault of the person who served you, so no need to get angry at them. Just doing their job

Secondly, going above and beyond the call of duty isn't the easiest thing in the world to do when you're pulling pints. Not like you're growing the barley yourself. What would you consider going beyond the call of duty? I work in a hotel, with occasional work in a local pub and another hotel. I often serve a few people at the same time, and i'm pretty decent at remembering rounds. Is that considered going beyond the call of duty, if you come up to me after half an hour and i remember your round? Personally, i think it's just being good at your job.

Most bar staff don't serve every single person expecting a tip, but it is a nice gesture to make if you're happy with the service. Much less common in pubs than hotels though. And i can tell ye now, the money isn't all that spectacular. And hours are getting slim. So not tipping cause you suspect they're making more than you is a bit of a cop out in my opinion.

smallBiscuit, i don't think she'd have been heart-broken if you gave her a tip, but i can assure you she didn't lose any sleep over the fact you didn't.
