    Hi All,

I may be in the wrong furum - struggling to locate the right one.

I'm looking to get a microphone battery box tomorrow in Dublin, but can find nothing online..

I have a minidisc recorder with no mic in, and need to plug a mic in to the line-in jack. Which, I'm told, needs a battery box.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

    Thanks :D

I simply plug my condenser mic into my minidisk recorder.

Its the microphone from my wireless transmitter, works fine without phantom power, which is what I imagine you are referring to.

What make and model is your minidisk recorder?

It's an old Sony MZ-R500. It has no mic in, just a line in.

Everything I read online points me at the battery box being the only solution..

Any ideas? I can't see them anywhere online...

I'll dig out my kit and post the details of how I'm running the mic. Although thinking about it, I think my MD recorder has a mic input in addition to the line input.

So it may be that you'll need a mic that is powered. Let me have a dig around and see what I'll come up with in terms of pointing you in the right direction.

Do you already have a microphone? If so, please could you post the details such as make, model and connector. I might have an alternative cost effective solution for you.

What you need is a mic preamp. There's no such thing as a battery box!

Its a sony ECMMS907, which has battery powering it. From what I have read, I believe it should be do the job, but doesn't. it has a 3.5 jack.

Have other standard mics too with various connections.

Yup, regardless of whether it's a dynamic mic or a condensor mic you'll still need a mic preamp to increase (amplify) the mic level to line level. As it's a stereo mic, do you want to make stereo recordings? If you do, you need a 2 channel preamp. Are you still looking to do this or has the time passed? If you still need it, I'll look for some options for you.

I am indeed connecting my microphone to the Mic input on my MD recorder.

Somewhere like X Music (or any good retailer) should be able to sort you out with a suitable pre-amplifier.

Alternatively, MD recorders are so cheap second hand, that to pick one up with a mic input may very well cost less than purchasing a pre-amplifier.

You have been vefy helpful thanks lads.

I mentioned "tomorrow" in original post as was going to be in the city the next day. Looking to get sorted for early next week on a limited budget. Had a look for a second hand MD alright.

What price would I be looking at for a pre-amp or is there any you'd know?

Don't know what price pre-amps run at but the MD recorders are pretty cheap on the second hand market. From €5 upto around €80, with around €20 being a typical price.
