Genetically Designed Babies

What do AH think of the Genetically Designed Babies where you can pick your babies eye colour, hair colour etc...etc....

I don't think we should be messing with the gene's in this way but nonetheless if it continues in the future you may be able to take gene's from other animals / plants and integrate them into the human body.


A sort of hybrid human, if this is the case I would want the following for myself :


The muscles of a bear ( in arms )
The skull of a Elephant ( thick Skull )
The willy of a horse
The muslces of a cheetah ( in legs )
The Nose power ( smell ) that a bear has
The eyes of a Hawk
The hearing of a Gazelle
The Neck of Bertie Ahearn

Now if only some good AH can create a photoshop'd hybrid human of what I would look like that would be awesome.

( I don't literally mean the skull of an elephant or the eyes of a hawk, what I mean is that the eyesight a hawk has will be matched into my eyes but my eyes would still be human, just have hawk powers )

If this is the case in say 400 yrs time what would you like to be or have ??

I think the whole idea of genetically modified kids is kinda frightening. Reminds me of those kids from the Children of the Corn movies..

Who is "ourselves".

The human race is not one unified bloc of consciousness, if we die out and get replaced by laser wielding robotic masters we won't be happy or sad about it as each individual will have been gone by then. We have nothing to gain nor lose by our spot in the sun being maintained after our demise.

I'd love to know what that has to do with surrogacy, by the way, which only enhances human development if anything.

I don't know, it may aggravate racial divisions and entrench enmities.

At the moment, racial divisions are melting as ethnicities interbreed with one another. Such a situation as was mentioned is the polar opposite, where societies (to have normal children) would recede into their own national identity, probably wiping out some of the progress that has been made in racial integration.

Thats not your big problem. Your big problem will be rich/poor divisions as the wealthy and their progeny start living for centuries with better intelligence and health as well as inherited riches. Social divisions? Try when the rich are a different species entirely!

Well people having "dual-race"(?) children will most likely continue to do so.

Racists would only have kids of their own race anyway and will continue to do so.

I would like...

Wings... like an eagle,
A big long tongue... like a frog, to catch flies :P (just for the craic! ha ha)
to be able to breathe under water,
defence mechanisms - retractable claws & teeth (like a great white)

.... and a big bushy beard... just to confuse people

I'd have it so my baby has a retractable leg so as it can leap up at you better and that it could light up at night too. Oh and it's gotta have four ears. Two of them are for listening and the other two are kind of like back-up ears, and would have claws as big as cups. Hmmmmm maybe some magnets on it's tail so's if you're made out of metal it can attach itself to you, and instead of a mouth it's got four arses.

If your restricted to the parents genetic material you won't have all that many choices. You'll just be able to pick between the best of each parent.

I don't think genetic material messing will become popular, I think the natural instinct would be to roll the dice on everything bar disease and deformity. I don't think people would want to pick from genetic material outside of the partnership as it would mean your not passing on your own genes which your natural instincts won't be too happy about.

hmm, why would one need 4 arses though ?
What genetic advantage would this give you ?

Your toilet roll bill would be quite hefty as well I would imagine.

The legs of a kangaroo
The illuminous from a deep sea fish

These gene's could be pulled and inserted so as funny as it sounds it could be done, perhaps.......

Regarding racist people only choosing to have babies of their own race, surely that's what's always happened anyway. In the 1960s, members of the KKK hardly would have chosen to have an African American child. Designer babies won't change that.

And as another poster said, it would go against most people's natural and parental instincts to choose to have a child who's genes are wildly different to theirs.

It's a complicated one. I'm not sure if I'd agree with it, but I can see how many people would.
