I'm sick of all there "austerity" measures that take no account of the general moral of the Irish people. (Surely it can't be that they actually want the populace to be depressed and compliant?) So if you were elected Minister for Cheering People Up A Bit, what measures would you introduce that would have little or no impact on the exchequer? Hmmm...

I'd radically overhaul the licencing hours. In order to help people to take full advantage of these new opportunities, i'd legalize (and tax) a range of uplifting recreational drugs.

Legalise weed = massive boost to the exchequer, less criminals (or at least hurt existing criminals in the pocket) and everyone that bit happier :)

Public executions of Clampers in a Colluseum Rome type format.

I'd legalise the on the spot smashing of improper lighting, and make it mandatory to carry a small hammer purely for this purpose.

Free cheese and give-away budgets! Ban lightbulbs! Incentivise more diesel particulates in built-up areas! Self regulation for all building projects and plenty of tax breaks for developers and landlords! Less tax for all and more social welfare.

Oh wait... :o wrong thread! I'm SO embarrassed!

Equitable tax rates between CO2 and CC taxes - so as Not to have a situation where 17% of motorists contribute 9% of the motor tax revenue.

Also - bring our tax rates (from CC) down a little to be similar to the UK. Where it costs roughly £500 to tax most >3.0 cars, as opposed to €1650 here

I'd have loads of "ladies" dressed up as scantily clad French maids all over the place, in cafes, on buses, on trains, wandering around shops etc....... and seems as I'd be a minister they'd be about 14 of them in my office.

Two for one - equip them with superhero outfits and little hammers for administering shoddy HID justice!

Make all government ministers pay be reduced to the minimum wage and remove access to their bank accounts so they have to support themselves and their families on €8.65 an hour.
Then have camera's follow them around reality tv style so we can all watch every night.

Not only will we be entertained but the exchequer will actually save money and when they go back to their normal lives, they might know how to actually represent the people they work for!

The Free Cheese - remember that.

I actually got some of that.....don't ask....though I'm not actually on the poverty line at all. It was ok for sandwiches and stuff.

It makes me laugh at how crazy things were (are) that the government of the time thought it would go down really well to give out free cheese....mental.
