South Of France Recommendations June 2012

    Hi.
Myself and my OH are considering spending 5-7 days in the South of France next June during Euro 2012 before probably finishing with 3 days in Madrid befor heading home again. Neither of us have been to this part of the country before (been to Paris once is all).

I am finding it extremely difficult to find much info (of the personal recommendations variety) on various forums on this part of France.
Could anyone who has been to this region before maybe give us some recommendations of what they see as the best towns to stay in & maybe recommend some not-to-be-missed activities, restaurants etc?

I think we would like to at least visit towns such as Nice,Cannes,Monaco,St Tropez. I also read somewhere that Antibes is nice?
I really don't know a great deal about any of these places and if they would even be worth spending time in.
If there is no need to hire a car then I would probably not do so but have no issues with doing this if people feel that it is the way to go.

Thanks a lot in advance for any help.

Nice is a good place to base yourself in for such a trip. You've got easy access to bus and rail to take you anywhere along the coast as well as easy access to the motorway if you want to go inland.

Monaco is 30 minutes away by bus or train (the bus takes a nice scenic route, so you'll see the coastline), Antibes is 30 minutes by train in the other direction and Cannes another 15 mins beyond that.

You don't really need to hire a car, but if you choose to take a trip inland to the likes of Grasse or elsewhere in Provence, then it's no harm to have one.

As for how long you'd spend in any of these places, you could easily spend a couple of days in Nice, wandering around the old town and taking in galleries. A walk on the Promenade des Anglais is a must too. Monaco is only worth a few hours of your time and beyond the castle and Casino Square there's really nothing much to it.

Antibes is beautiful, it's a walled town and it's nice to have a walk around, again a few hours here is plenty. Villefranche is a lovely town similar to Antibes but has some great cafes and restaurants on the quayside.

Cannes is pretty good. It's a great place to go and watch the world go by.

From Nice you have plenty of options for travel to Madrid, including a train if you're up to it!

I put up a fairly lengthy post a while back with more detail on Nice and I'll see if I can dig it up for you and link it here. But for now, my advice is to base yourself in Nice.
